【第1篇】大雁塔英文导游词

Asthesymboloftheold-lineXian,BigWildGoosePagodaisawell-preservedancientbuildingandaholyplaceforBuddhists.ItislocatedinthesouthernsuburbofXianCity,about4kilometers(2.49miles)fromthedowntownofthecity.StandingintheDaCienTemplecomplex,itattractsnumerousvisitorsforitsfameintheBuddhistreligion,itssimplebutappealingstyleofconstruction,anditsnewsquareinfrontofthetemple.ItisratedasaNationalKeyCulturalRelicPreserveaswellasanAAAATouristAttraction.

Thisattractioncanbedividedintothreeparts:

theBigWildGoosePagoda,theDaCienTemple,andtheNorthSquareofBigWildGoosePagoda.

BigWildGoosePagodaOriginallybuiltin652duringthereignofEmperorGaozongoftheTangDynasty(618-907),itfunctionedtocollectBuddhistmaterialsthatweretakenfromIndiabythehierarchXuanzang.

XuanzangstartedofffromChangan(theancientXian),alongtheSilkRoadandthroughdeserts,finallyarrivinginIndia,thecradleofBuddhism.Enduring17yearsandtraversing100countries,heobtainedBuddhafigures,657kindsofsutras,andseveralBuddharelics.HavinggottenthepermissionofEmperorGaozong(628-683),Xuanzang,asthefirstabbotofDaCienTemple,supervisedthebuildingofapagodainsideit.Withthesupportofroyalty,heasked50hierarchsintothetempletotranslateSanskritinsutrasintoChinese,totaling1,335volumes,whichheraldedanewerainthehistoryoftranslation.BasedonthejourneytoIndia,healsowroteabookentitledPilgrimagetotheWestintheTangDynasty,towhichscholarsattachedgreatimportance.

Firstbuilttoaheightof60meters(197feet)withfivestories,itisnow64.5meters(211.6feet)highwithanadditionaltwostories.Itwassaidthatafterthatadditioncamethesaying-Savingalifeexceedsbuildingaseven-storiedpagoda.Externallyitlookslikeasquarecone,simplebutgrandanditisamasterpieceofBuddhistconstruction.Builtofbrick,itsstructureisveryfirm.Insidethepagoda,stairstwistupsothatvisitorscanclimbandoverlookthepanoramaofXianCityfromthearch-shapeddoorsonfoursidesofeachstorey.OnthewallsareengravedfinestatuesofBuddhabytherenownedartistYanLibenoftheTangDynasty.Stelesbynotedcalligraphersalsogracethepagoda.

AsforthereasonwhyitiscalledBigWildGoosePagoda,thereisalegend.AccordingtoancientstoriesofBuddhists,thereweretwobranches,foroneofwhicheatingmeatwasnotataboo.Oneday,theycouldntfindmeattobuy.Uponseeingagroupofbigwildgeeseflyingby,amonksaidtohimself:

Todaywehavenomeat.IhopethemercifulBodhisattvawillgiveussome.Atthatverymoment,theleadingwildgoosebrokeitswingsandfelltotheground.AllthemonkswerestartledandbelievedthatBodhisattvashowedhisspirittoorderthemtobemorepious.Theyestablishedapagodawherethewildgoosefellandstoppedeatingmeat.HenceitgotthenameBigWildGoosePagoda.

DaCienTemple

DaCienTempleisthehomeofBigWildGoosePagoda.In648,tocommemoratethedeadvirtuousqueen,royaltyorderedthebuildingofatemplenamedCien(MercyandKindness),forwhichthestatusandscalefarexceededallothers.Today,withanareaof32,314squaremeters(38,648.5squareyards),oneseventhoftheoriginalarea,itstillretainsitsgrandeur.

Beforethetemple,therestandsastatueofhierarchXuanzang,themeritorioushierarch.Walkingonandacrossasmallbridge,visitorswillseethegatesofthetemple.Withguardinglions,thetempleseemsstatelyforlionsweresaidtofunctionastalismans.

Enteringthetempleyouwillseetwobuildings-BellTowerintheeastandDrumTowerinthewest.InsidetheBellTowerhangsanironbell15tons(14.76grosstons)inweight.Itwasmoldedin1548intheMingDynasty(1368-1644).AlongthecentralaxisarearrangedtheHallofMahavira,SermonHall,BigWildGoosePagoda,andtheHallofXuanzangSanzang.IntheHallofMahaviraarethreecarvedstatuesofSakyamuni,and18arhatsaswellasXuanzang.TheSermonHalliswhereBuddhistdiscipleswouldlistentoasermon.AbronzestatueofAmitabhaisdedicatedandaBuddhastatueiscollectedbyXuanzangasoblation.TheHallofXuanzangSanzangisnorthofBigWildGoosePagoda.InthishallareXuanzangsrelicandabronzestatueofaseatedXuanzang.Theinnerwallischiseledwithmuralsdepictingthishierarchsstory.RenownedasthecontemporaryDunhuangBuddhiststorehousepraisedbyUNESCO,itisthebiggestmemorialofXuanzang.

NorthSquareofBigWildGoosePagoda

SurroundingBigWildGoosePagoda,thesceneryisalsoquitecharming,especiallythesquarenorthoftheDaCienTemple.Coveringabout110,000squaremeters(131563squareyards)plus20,000squaremeters(23920.6squareyards)ofwaterarea,itholdsmanyrecords:

inAsia,itisthebiggestTang-culturesquare,thebiggestfountainandwaterscapesquare,andthelargest-scalesculpturesarea.Intheworld,ithasthemostbenches,thelongestlight-belt,andthelargest-scaleacousticcomplex.

Theentiresquareiscomposedofwaterscapefountains,aculturalsquare,gardensandtouristpaths.ThereyoucantasterealChinesecultureandtraditionsandfullyenjoythetrulyattractiveviews.WithreliefsonthethemeoftheprosperousTangDynasty,200-meter-long(656-foot-long)sculpturegroups,8groupsofsculptedfigures,40relievosontheland,and22stylesofmusicalfountains,ithasbecomeamust-seewhenyouvisitBigWildGoosePagoda.

WelcometoDayanPagoda,amagnificentplaceinhistory.I’myourtourguidetoday,xiaoWangfromXISUTourismInstitute.

DayanPagodaissituatedintheDaCi’enTemple,about4kmfromtheurbancenter;itisoneofthefamousBuddhistpagodasinChina.

DaCienTempleislocatedinthesouthernsuburbofXianCity,originallyJinchangLaneinthesoutheastofChanganCity,thecapitaloftheTangDynasty.ItwasthelargesttempleinChinasTangDynastyaswellasoneofthethreeBuddhistscripturestranslationplacesofChanganCityintheTangDynasty.DaCienTemplewasbuiltintheyear648oftheZhenguanreignoftheTangDynastybyCrownPrinceLizhiinordertomournforhismother.Therefore,itisnamedDaCien.SincetheTangDynasty,DaCienTemplehaskeptitsprosperityformorethan1,300years.Itshistoryislongandglorious.Now,theextantareaofthistempleisjustthatoftheWestPagodaYardintheTangDynasty.ThepresentDaCienTemplesitsbacktothenorthandfacestothesouth,andconsistsofthefollowingmainbuildings:

GateoftheTemple,BellandDrumTowers,HallfortheGreatBuddha,etc.

In652AD,DayanPagodawasbuilttostorethesutrasandthefigurinesofBuddha,whichwerebroughtfromIndiabyafamousBuddhisttranslatorandtravelerTangSanzang,alsoknownbyhisBuddhistnameasXuanzang.XuanZangwenttoIndiatoresearchtheBuddhistdoctrinesin629AD,andthenhecamebackin645ADwithagreatdealofBuddhistscriptures.Inthetemple,hetranslatedlotsofchaptersoftheBuddhistscripturesintoChinese.InordertoprotecttheBuddhistScriptures,MonkXuanzangaskedforapagodatobebuilt.HedesignedthepagodalikeawildgooseashesawinIndia.SothispagodawascalledtheWildGoosePagodainmemoryofthefamousMonk.Itsfivestoreysare60metersinheight.Thedecayoftheearth-coredpagodacausedthenewconstructionofa10-storeypagodafrom701to704.Damagebythewarreducedittosevenstoreys,towhatitistoday.

Thestoryedpagodawasanarchitecturalmarvel.Itwasbuiltwithlayersofbricksbutwithoutanycementinbetween.ThebracketstyleintraditionalChinesearchitecturewasalsousedintheconstruction.Thegrandbodyofthepagodawithitssolemnappearance,simplestyleandhighstructure,isindeedagoodexampleofancientpeopleswisdomandtalent.WallsanddoorsarecarvedwithvividandexquisitefiguresofBuddha,reflectingtheprofundityinthepaintingsoftheTangDynasty.

IntheTangdynasty,everysuccessfulcandidatewhopassedtheimperialexaminationswouldhavetoclimbupDayanPagodaandwrotepoemsandinscriptionsthere.Thisritualwouldsymbolizeasoaringcareerinthefuture.ThefashionofwritingpoemsandleavinginscriptionsonthehorizontalbarsoverdoorsandstoneframeworksbysuccessfulcandidatesoftheimperialexaminationswentonasfarastheMingdynasty.Thesepoemsandinscriptionshavesurvivedtillthisdayasafinemirrortothecityspast.

Therearefantasticviewsfromthetopofthepagodaofthegrid-likestreetsbelowanditseemshardtobelievetodaythattheareaaroundherewasoncecountrysideandfields!

Itistraditionaltothrowcoinsfromthewindowsofthepagodainthehopethatthiswillbringgoodluck.

TheMingDynastyWuChengen,collectedthematerialsofXuanzangsexperiencehandeddownandwroteanoveltitledJourneytotheWestwhichlaterbecameoneoffourgreatestnovelsinChina.Asaresult,theTelevisionSeriesaboutthisstorywasmadeandbecameworld-renowned.

SurroundingBigWildGoosePagoda,thesceneryisalsoquitecharming.TheMusicFountainisthebiggestthebiggestfountainandwaterscapesquareinAsia.Intheworld,ithasthemostbenches,thelongestlight-belt,andthelargest-scaleacousticcomplex.
