Thistransformation,Ibelieve,willunderscorethecriticalimportanceofinformationtechnologyasadriverofcompetitivesuccessandrealeconomicgrowthforChina.
Sotoday,IwanttotalktoyouaboutwhatIbelievehastobetheagendaofaleaderofanenterprise--business,governmentagency,university,hospital,bankanywhereintheworld--theagendaregardingthistechnology.IwilldothatfromtheperspectivethatIbroughttoIBM.
SomeofyouknowthatbeforeIcametoIBM,mybackgroundwasalotlikeyours.IwasacustomerofIBM.Iwasacustomerofthecomputerindustry.IarrivedatIBMwithafirmlyheldconvictionthatthistechnologyisoneofthosetransformationaltechnologiesthatcomesalongeveryhundredyearsorsoandchangeseverythinginoursociety.Iwasn'taloneinthisopinion,butatthattime,itwasn'tsoeasytofindalotofexamplesofentireindustriesbeingchangedbytheapplicationofinformationtechnology.

Thesenumbersareinteresting,buttherealimportantquestionis:

Nottoolongago,theprevailingviewwasthattheNetwasaboutlookingupinformation,orthatitwasamediumforinterpersonalcommunication,areplacementforthetelephoneorpostoffice.
