Withaliteraryhistorythatgoesbackasfarastheseventeenthcentury,FloridahaslongbeenamajorhauntforwritersfromallovertheUnitedStates.JonathanDickinson,whosegroupofQuakerswascastuponthecoastnearwhatisnowPalmBeachaftertheywerewreckedenroutefromJamaicatoPennsylvania,recordedthetragedyinGod'sProtectingProvidencein1699.NotonlywasthisbookoneofAmerica'sfirstbestsellers,butitwasalsothefirstaccountoftheAmericanIndiansofthesoutheasterncoast.OtherearlywriterswhofollowedDickinsoncelebratedtherichandvariousplantandanimallifeoftheregion,strikingsympatheticchordsintheimaginationsofRalphWaldoEmersonandtheEnglishpoetsWilliamWordsworthandSamuelTaylorColeridge.
