4、ny studies are focused on English news. And I want to know how to better analysis the language feature, due to effectively acquiring knowledge from those websites. This essay mainly studies the linguistic features of English News on stylistics. The study is consist of mainly three aspects of News En

5、glish. They are lexical features, sentence features and grammar features of News English. According to the study, people can find that News English, as a distinctive and new language, has its own linguistic features in words, sentences and grammar. For example: English news often use metaphor, meton

IntroductionWith the fast development of globalization, English has become the language which is used

7、 world-widely, and English news has certainly become an essential part of life. Thus the study of News English has become very important. It is not only essential for linguists but also helpful for English learners. News English, as a newly formed language, has its own features on stylistics. In ord

8、er to help people better understand News English, this essay will show mainly on stylistic features of News English in its words, sentences and grammar. Such as in the part of words, the English news often uses midget words, abbreviated words and loan words. While in the part of sentence features, t

9、hey often use passive voices, present tense and loose sentence. 2. The lexical features in English news The words in News English are very plentiful. There are vivid and graphic oral words, midget words, abbreviated words, borrowed words, loanwords, euphemisms and many other new words. Here are the

10、main features of the words in News English.2.1 Using vivid and graphic oral wordsMost of the readers of News English are common people. They are busy with their works and always have very short time to read the News. So News English should be easy to understand and close to common people.Bruise told

11、 that there is a software company, and they want to design some mobile phones, none of them can caught fire.(Bruise, 1990)“Catch fire”originally means“be on fire”, which can make us think about the fires spreading to all directions. Here it refers to something that develops quickly. In this sentence

12、“caught fire”means the three Windows created by Microsoft dont become popular and have little importance. This kind of use makes the sentence more graphic.The people in English-speaking countries know the oral words very well, so they can understand the report easily, and they all like this vivid an

13、d lively language style very much. This kind of report can attract their attention and make them feel interested.2.2 Using midget wordsBecause of the limited time and length, the authors of the News English always want to make their report short and brief. They try their best to use the least words

14、to express the deepest meanings. These words are short and small, but they can expressmany meanings clearly. Many people are familiar with these words. Using midget words can not only make a news report short and effective, but also attract peoples attentions. Here are midget words which often found

15、 in News English: cutreduce, decrease (削减); issueproblem, question (问 题); oustexpel, remove (驱 逐);paywage, salary (工资).(the character is used to explain the meaning of the word)Sometimes these midget words are used by changing their part of speech. For example:“Dwight Stewart, chairman of Clarendon

16、County Council, who along with Summerton Mayor Beth Hinson Philips, is one of the few whites to openly back Elliotts campaign”.“back”here is used as a verb which equals to“support”. Itis shorter and more acceptable than“support”. (Roger.1991:173)It gives the readers a fresh and new feeling. Midget w

17、ords are often used in the headlines of News English because they can attract peoples eyes at the first sight. It is a distinctive lexical feature of News English. 2.3 Using abbreviated words(小型词)Like the midget words, using abbreviated words also make the news short and brief. In this way the autho

18、rs can save more space in the page of the newspaper. More and more abbreviated words have been used recently. There are mainly three kinds of abbreviated words. 2.3.1 Acronym(缩略词)This kind of abbreviated word is formed from the initial letters of a group of words. The names of organizations, compani

19、es and units are always written as acronyms for short. Acronyms can save the length of a report effectively. You can find their meanings from the contents of the news. Here are some popular acronyms in News English: EUEuropean Union; IOCInternational Olympic Committee.(china daily,2008)Acronyms are

20、so popular that they are widely used not only in western countries but also in China. They are more eye-catching and interesting than the long group of words. The pronunciations of acronyms are not fixed. Some are read according to the pronunciations of the letters, and some are read as a new word.

21、They are all written by capital letters.2.3.2 Clipping words(裁剪词)The clippings are created by some authors of News English. For saving the printed page and time, they cut some long words and use one part of the word instead of the whole word. There are three kinds of clippings: (1) Cut the end part

22、of a word: adadvertisement (广告);(China Daily,2008)(2) Cut the front part of a word: quakeearthquake (地震); (China Daily,2008)(3) the front and end parts of a word: fluinfluenza (流感); (China Daily,2008)2.3.3 Special abbreviated words(简短词)Because of the widely usage, some abbreviated words become forma

23、l words in the dictionary. For example: mgrmanager(经理); fotogphotographer (摄影师).Most of abbreviations make the News English more brief and short, but sometimes a new abbreviated word can bring some problems to the readers. So the author thinks the use of abbreviations should be limited and there sho

24、uld be some notes at the end of the news.(chenxiaoru,1999)2.4 Using borrowed and loan wordsSome words in News English are borrowed in trades and communication, such as sports, military, science, commerce, and so on. These borrowed words make the news report more vivid and interesting. The readers ca

25、n have a fresh feeling when read these words. We can see many examples in newspapers:Reviewing Chinas performance in the world arena during the past 30 years, we find this nation has had a stable and strategic U.S. policy. There are two borrowed words. Taking for examples,“Arena”is a sports term. It

26、 refers to the level area in the centre of an amphitheatre or a sports stadium. Here its extended meaning is“stage”. The author used“arena”to indicate that the world is like a place of activity and competition, and every country can give its own performance and compete with other countries here.“Str

27、ategic”is a military term. It means“forming part of a plan”and always describes some military plans. Here it has a new meaningwell-planed. It emphasizes the importance of the U.S. policy in China.In News English names of places and buildings are also borrowed frequently. For example, they use“White

28、House”instead of American government. They also use many color words to replace some long phrases. Borrowed words make the contents of News English plentiful and colorful.Meanwhile, like the borrowed words, using loan words also make the news short and brief. Loanwords refer to the words from other

29、languages. English is a mixture language and it becomes the world language. People all over the world communicate with each other frequently nowadays and most of them use English to change their ideas. They bring many new words to English. News English often report some oversea news. Using loanwords

30、 can attract the readersattentions and give them some information of foreigners.Some loanwords are from Chinese. For example:“In Kung Fu film Business, Bruce Lee lives on”. Here“Kung Fu”is the pronunciation of the Chinese word”功夫”. They use“Kung Fu film”to replace“action film”because Chinese Kung Fu

31、 is very famous and typical. Using“Kung Fu”can make the report more eye-catching.The following words are all loanwords: Blitz (闪电行动)German; visa (签证)French; rapport (和睦,友好)French; tofu (豆腐)Chinese; tycoon (巨 头)Japanese. There are many other loanwords in the English vocabulary. Loanwords are widely u

32、sed in News English because they can represent the features of their own countries. They add many shining points to News English.2.5 Using Euphemisms(委婉语)News English faces to the public and all classes of the society. The language not only needs to be brief and clear, but also proper and moderate. A popular newspaper always uses euphemisms to please its readers. When the government makes some new orders that are not good news to the common people, they often use
