9、ope. Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), Roses finance is traveling with them. He is very rich, but very nasty. Only a self-centered, social-climbing mother could want this guy for a son-in-law. As anyone could easily predict, Rose doesnt love Cal. Why should she? He treats her like a piece of property. She i

10、s only marrying him to please her mother. In addition, Rose feels trapped by the social rules of the upper class. At the beginning of the movie, Rose recalls her trip on the Titanic, as . a slave ship, taking me back to America in chains. Suddenly, we see Rose running across the deck to commit suici

11、de by jumping off the ship. Cameron doesnt provide enough background for such a desperate act but he needed a way for Rose and the hero Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), to meet. The scene is unrealistic but it gets the job done. Jack is a poor but bold artist who had already noticed Rose from afar.

12、This is where the film starts to take off.It has all of the elegance and romance of a 1940s Hollywood film. In true Hollywood fashion, Rose introduces young Jack to civilized upper-class society, horrifying her mother and making her finance very jealous. In return, Jack shows her that you dont have

13、to be rich to have fun, and teaches her to spit like a man. The romance between Jack and Rose takes up the first half of the movie. Then the iceberg hits and we see Cameron at his best. The special effects are the most amazing that he (or any other director) has ever put on the screen. This is his t

14、rue streng由as a director. Of course, no film is without its faults. One major problem is that not enough is done with the minor characters. For example, Danny Nuccis role as Jacks friend is left completely underdeveloped. And Kathy Bates is wonderful as Molly Brown, but we dont see enough of her. In

15、 addition, the main characters are stereotypes. Rose is beautiful and sweet. Jack is poor but honest. And Cal is thoroughly evil. However, despite these faults, you will find yourself caring about and believing in these people. The computer-generated special effects are simply awesome. There will be

16、 no dollbt in your mind that the Titanic is sinking. However, other scenes, such as crowd scenes. are not as beIievable. Cameron uses computer images most effectively to connect the past to由e present. Forexample, he shows us the wreck of the Titanic lying on the floor of the ocean and then magically

17、 it becomes the ship moving through the sea. No one knows ifTitanic will make money or not. With a price tag of $ 200 million, it will have to do very. very well both in由e United States and abroad.
