10、eviewEnglish learning is a very complicated process that is influenced by many factors, in english learning, motivation is very important and many people have their own opinions about this. Don Hamachek thought motives serve three important functions: energizing us, directing us, and helping us to s

11、elect the behavior most appropriate for achieving our goals, and extrinsic motivators are sometimes necessary either to get students started in the first place, or to start them down a track that they might not know exists; Jia Guanjie indicated that the motivation of foreign language learning conta

12、ins four aspects: a goal, effortful behavior, a desire to attain the goal and attitude; Phil Benson says that autonomy, or the ability of learners to control their own learning, has become a key concept in language education, influencing activities as diverse as self-access, distance learning, compu

13、ter-assisted language learning, learner training, classroom practice and curriculum design in his book; In Motivating language learners, Chambers provides practical strategies to enhance the enjoyment of the in-class experience and the status of modern languages on the curriculum. 14、lso have my own viewpoint.1.2 The Significance of the ResearchIn recent years in China, learning English has been a very prevalent tendency and it has become more popular and urgent as China succeeded in holding the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai Expo. Mastery of a foreign language, especi

15、ally English is viewed as a passport to ones future success, thus, more and more people swarm into the tide of English learning. In addition, the English learners have become younger and younger and English courses are taught in Grade Three or Grade One of primary schools and even in kindergartens.

16、Furthermore, most parents send the children to some after-school English classes at the weekends in the hope of promoting the childrens English learning, yet some of the teachers and parents are in frustration of recognition of their childrens low attitudes and grades in English learning. Therefore,

17、 as teachers, they should know the psychological theory and process about English learning in order to encourage students to learn it and enhance their interest and motivation.1.3 Organization of the Research We know motivation plays an vital role in English learning, thus, how to effectively motiva

18、te students becomes an important problem. As for this the paper aims at expounding its importance and ways to motivate students. Here is the organization. First the author shows the definition of motivation and then explains intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and their relations, following with some

19、 personal factors that influence motivation. Then according to the rationale, the author suggests several effective ways to motivate students in English learning. At last, taking teachers unique roles into consideration, the author makes a comparison between two teaching methods, and new requirement

How can we know whether a student is motivated in learning.2.1.1 In the Term of Psychology People are always motivated; in fact, they are never unmotivated. They may not be motivated to do what they are expected to, but it can never be truly said

23、they are unmotivated. In psychology, motivation is a force that energizes and directs behavior toward a goal. Just as a force moves an object, motivation moves a person. More visualized, if individuals are machines, motivation is as the very engine that powers and directs individuals behavior. Motiv

24、es serve three important functions: 1) energizing us (i.e., turning the key and starting the motivational engine), 2) directing us (i.e., pointing us in a particular direction), and 3) helping us to decide the behavior that is most appropriate for achieving our goals. In a word, motivation is an inn

25、er state that arouses individuals desire for a goal and maintains their efforts to a certain direction for a period of time.2.1.2 In Language Learning In language learning, motivation is not only a strong desire for learning and acquiring knowledge of a language, but also an inner cause that pushes

26、students forward in English learning with enthusiasm and willingness. It is something like the engine and steering wheels of an automobile that can move students from boredom to interest. It is an inner power to drive and preserve students in English learning. Gardner indicates that the motivation o

Students who have powerful learning motivation take a correct and positive attitude towards study and make great efforts to master English with clear goals and desires and consequently gain better grades than those who havent acquired m
