In spite of so much Id like to say, I shall only share with you three stories, all of which are simple.First, a story of our teachers.In 1970, the then Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages resumed its operation. At that time, Guangdong Revolution Committee decided to in

4、corporate the Department of Foreign Languages of Sun Yat-sen University, the Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of Foreign Trade of Jinan University into Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages, which was established in 1965. From that year, the young GIFL boasted a large number of

5、masters in the field of foreign languages and literature, eminent academic figures such as Professor Liang Zongdai, Professor Dai Liuling, Professor Wang Zongyan and our distinguished alumni Professor Zeng Zhaoke have set good examples for teachers and students of this university with their moral in

6、tegrity and academic achievements. It is no surprise that many younger scholars emerged following these masters and excelled in their field of research, for example, Professor Gui Shichun in psycholinguistics and standardized examination, Professor Gui Caikun in Phonetics, Professor Weng Xianliang i

7、n Translation Studies, Professor Li Xiaoju in language testing and communicative methodology for foreign language teaching, and Professor He Ziran in Pragmatics. In 1990s, another outstanding academic research team emerged and entered the leading position in the whole nation. This team has such exce

8、llent scholars as Professor Huang Jianhua in Lexicography, Professor Qian Guanlian in Chinese Pragmatics, Professor Wang Chuming in Second Language Acquisition, Professor Xiao Huiyun in Communicative Teaching Methodology, and Professor Wang Guizhen in Phonetics research. Entering the 21st century, w

9、e are every bit as passionate about academic innovation as we had always been. Professor Qian Guanlian broke new trails for Philosophy of Language, Professor Zheng Lihua was widely recognized in the field of Cross-cultural Communication, Professor Zhang Yihua achieved integrated study of the compili

10、ng and research of dictionaries, Professor Wang Chuming became a pioneer in the teaching reform centering on improving English proficiency through writing, Professor Ran Yongping carried out painstaking research in Pragmatics, Professor Luan Dong achieved success in his interdisciplinary research ac

11、ross the boundaries of Literature, History, Philosophy and Aesthetics, Professor Zhong Weihe and his team are widely acclaimed for their impeccable conferencing interpreting skills. The achievements of these scholars have raised Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to the top in the teaching and

12、research of relevant disciplines. In 1980, Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade was established along with the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy. Since its establishment, the Institute has set the goal of cultivating students that are strong both in theoretical foundations and in pr

13、actical work and has shouldered the task of producing foreign trade professionals for South China. GIFT boasted a number of masters whose teaching can be characterized as case-based. Among these scholars are Professor Qian Yiming, expert in import and export procedures and a propagator of education

14、and teaching reforms, Professor Fang Zhenfu, expert in International Business Law and Insurance Law widely recognized by the legal studies circle of Guangdong, Professor Liu Duanlang, who devoted his life to teaching and set a role model of a teacher “content with teaching, enjoying teaching and ski

15、llful in teaching”, Professor Wang Yuqi, expert in International Trade Clearance and innovator of teaching methodology, and Professor Shen Boming, excellent academic figure in the research of WTO issues. The past decade since 1995 saw large numbers of highly qualified teachers with educational backg

16、rounds in and outside China and interdisciplinary knowledge structures joining GDUFS. These young scholars stand at the forefront of teaching and research and prove to be a strong support to the production of talents capable of working in the international environment. Our new hope of making incessa

17、nt achievements and opening up a brighter future lies with these teachers.Forty years have passed, yet we have never faltered in our teaching and research; we have never hesitated to impart knowledge to our future generations. Dear scholars, fellow colleagues, you have unselfishly devoted yourselves

18、 to Chinas education undertakings with your boundless love and faithfulness to the country and the nation. You have created the glory of our university with your boundless love for our students. Your teaching and research, which are rich with the thinking of different schools while remaining unique

19、and personalized, is the strongest force lifting GDUFS to greater heights. Second, a story of our students.Universities are often compared to the treasure trove of knowledge, the conscience of the society and the source of new knowledge as well as new technologies for the economic development. Given

20、 the sincere hope that the society pins on universities and the great responsibilities they shoulder, universities should naturally serve social progress and contribute to the well-being of the masses. How can GDUFS fulfill its role and reciprocate the solicitude and trust it has obtained from the s

21、ociety and its people? Our answer is: we shall do so with high quality teaching, high employment rate and high-level jobs for our graduates. In the past few years, our students have excelled and won prizes in large scale national as well as provincial competitions of foreign languages, foreign affai

22、rs, law, trade arbitration and computer programming. The past four years have seen an employment rate among our graduates of over 99%. Our graduates work in a variety of fields, taking high-level jobs, with over 80% of them employed by Fortune 500 companies, the 4 major accounting firms, foreign aff

23、airs offices and departments and foreign trade enterprises. Our alumni are scattered all across the world, some of whom are active in foreign affairs, foreign trade, finance, tourism and other lines, making tremendous contribution to promoting friendship between China and other lands and the reunifi

24、cation of the motherland. Some of our alumni have been devoted to scientific research and teaching, and have become eminent academic fellows or experts. The excellent performance of our students and graduates in all social fields has won our university a prestigious reputation in the society. Every

25、time when I see off our graduates, wishing them the best of luck in the fierce competitions and their future life, I cannot help wondering, what is the force that supports students of GDUFS, apart from their strong academic background and excellent cross-cultural communication skills?I found that an

26、swer in some students.That was a Sunday evening, when I met some students just returning from the city centre while I was having a walk on campus. The students greeted me. Seeing that they looked busy and excited, I said to them, without much thought, “You look so happy. Where have you been to enjoy

27、 yourselves this Sunday?” The students answered: “We took part in the voluntary teaching at the Sunday English School and just took a bus back.” I was moved by their answer. I was moved because through the fact that they had taken part in voluntary teaching, I could see their passion for life, their

28、 responsibility for the society and their love for others. I immediately recalled that we educators keep emphasizing the importance of education for all-round development, yet isnt this exactly what we wish to achieve through education for all-round development? So I replied to them: “Well done stud

29、ents! Voluntary teaching benefits you greatly in your growth. This is not financial benefit, but moral benefit. You will cultivate your moral integrity, which cannot be traded with money. As the president, I thank you for what you have done!” My words in turn moved the students. As we parted, I watc

30、hed them disappear in the golden evening sun; I had tears in my eyes at that very moment. Fellow students and alumni, forty years have passed. In these forty years of spring blossoms and autumn fruits, the history of our university was created not only by teachers with their dedication and contribut

31、ion, but also by students with their diligence and intelligence, and by our alumni with their knowledge and hard work. These achievements of you stand as the best testimony to the excellent teaching and learning of the university and the best gift that GDUFS students present to the 40th birthday of

32、their alma-mater. Third, a story of our university.Blossoms in the spring turn to harvests in the autumn. In the long human history, 40 years stand as nothing but a short elapse of time. Yet for any university, 40 years are sufficient for cultivating large numbers of talents and setting the high sta

33、ndards for the university.As an old Chinese saying goes, blazing a new trail in the morning haze helps people access to the mountain forest. By establishing a higher learning institution, we at GDUFS should help the tradition of cultivating talents and propagating truth live on. Therefore, we have upheld the motto of “Moral integrity, exemplary behaviour
