13、ouldbeours.Butthatpotentialwillberealizedonlyifourdemocracyworks.Onlyifourpoliticsreflectsthedecencyoftheourpeople.Onlyifallofus,regardlessofourpartyaffiliationorparticularinterest,helprestorethesenseofcommonpurposethatwesobadlyneedrightnow.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontonightthestateofourdemocracy.Unders
14、tand,democracydoesnotrequireuniformity.Ourfoundersquarreledandcompromised,andexpectedustodothesame.Buttheyknewthatdemocracydoesrequireabasicsenseofsolidaritytheideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,weareallinthistogether;thatweriseorfallasone.Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythatthreatenedtorup
15、turethatsolidarity.Thebeginningofthiscenturyhasbeenoneofthosetimes.Ashrinkingworld,growinginequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorismtheseforceshaventjusttestedoursecurityandprosperity,butourdemocracyaswell.Andhowwemeetthesechallengestoourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,and
16、creategoodjobs,andprotectourhomeland.Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.Ourdemocracywontworkwithoutasensethateveryonehaseconomicopportunity.Today,theeconomyisgrowingagain;wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfallingagain.Thewealthyarepayingafairershareoftaxesevena
17、sthestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemploymentrateisnearaten-yearlow.Theuninsuredratehasnever,everbeenlower.Healthcarecostsarerisingattheslowestrateinfiftyyears.AndifanyonecanputtogetheraplanthatisdemonstrablybetterthantheimprovementswevemadetoourhealthcaresystemthatcoversasmanypeopleatlesscostIwill
18、publiclysupportit.That,afterall,iswhyweservetomakepeopleslivesbetter,notworse.Butforalltherealprogresswevemade,weknowitsnotenough.Oureconomydoesntworkaswellorgrowasfastwhenafewprosperattheexpenseofagrowingmiddleclass.Butstarkinequalityisalsocorrosivetoourdemocraticprinciples.Whilethetoponepercenthas
19、amassedabiggershareofwealthandincome,toomanyfamilies,ininnercitiesandruralcounties,havebeenleftbehindthelaid-offfactoryworker;thewaitressandhealthcareworkerwhostruggletopaythebillsconvincedthatthegameisfixedagainstthem,thattheirgovernmentonlyservestheinterestsofthepowerfularecipeformorecynicismandpo
20、larizationinourpolitics.Therearenoquickfixestothislong-termtrend.Iagreethatourtradeshouldbefairandnotjustfree.Butthenextwaveofeconomicdislocationwontcomefromoverseas.Itwillcomefromtherelentlesspaceofautomationthatmakesmanygood,middle-classjobsobsolete.Andsowemustforgeanewsocialcompacttoguaranteeallo
21、urkidstheeducationtheyneed;togiveworkersthepowertounionizeforbetterwages;toupdatethesocialsafetynettoreflectthewaywelivenowandmakemorereformstothetaxcodesocorporationsandinpidualswhoreapthemostfromtheneweconomydontavoidtheirobligationstothecountrythatsmadetheirsuccesspossible.Wecanargueabouthowtobes

32、ionalstratification,thesplinteringofourmediaintoachannelforeverytasteallthismakesthisgreatsortingseemnatural,eveninevitable.Andincreasingly,webecomesosecureinourbubblesthatweacceptonlyinformation,whethertrueornot,thatfitsouropinions,insteadofbasingouropinionsontheevidencethatsoutthere.Thistrendrepresentsathirdthreattoourdemocracy.Politicsisabattleofideas;inthecourseofahealthydebate,wellprioritizedifferentgoals,andthedifferentmeansofreachingthem.Butwithoutsomecommonbaselineoffacts;withoutawillingnesstoadmitnewinformation,andconcedethatyouropponentismakingafairp
