、climate changeHow is mankind affected at large by climate change?IntroductionSlide 1: (General Information)Good morning teacher. My name is ZENG ZHEN. My English name is MAY.I m from China and I am studying in Advanced F.Today, I am going to talk about how are we affected by climate change?Slide 2: (
、Outline)Let me give you a brief overview of my outlineAlso, give you some reasons for climate change. Then, I will tell you what effects of climate change. Finally, I will end my presentation by recapping the body points and provide some suggestions to control climate change.Slide 3: (Definition)Now,
、I am going to explain what climate change is. According to Webster dictionary, “climate change” is sometimes used to refer to fall forms of climatic inconsistency, but because the earths climate is never static, the term is more properly used to imply a significant change from one climate condition
、to another. In some cases, “global warming” has been used synonymously with the term, “global warming” is the increase in the average temperature of earths near surface air and ocean since the mid-20th century.Slide 4: (Background)Now here is the background information about climate change. In this
、line graph, you can see global temperatures are rising from 1998 to 2005. This information is taken from nation oceanic and atmospheric administration.Body Slide 5: (First cause)What are the causes of climate change? There are many factors leading to climate change. Lets look at them in a little det
、ail. The first cause is a natural cause which is Continental drift. You may have noticed something peculiar about South America and Africa on a map of the world. About 200 million years ago they were joined together! The continents that we are familiar with today were formed when the landmass began gr
、adually drifting apart, millions of years back. This drift also had an impact on the climate because it changed the physical features of the landmass, their position and the position of water bodies. The separation of the landmasses changed the flow of ocean currents and winds, which affected the cl
、imate. This drift of the continents continues even today; the Himalayan range is rising by about 1 mm (millimeter) every year because the Indian land mass is moving towards the Asian land mass, slowly but steadily.Slide 6: (Second cause)Next, the second cause is the man-made problems of pollution. B
、urning fossil fuels is one way of causing air pollution. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal or oil. When fossil fuels are burned they give off a green house gas called CO2. Like the glass in a greenhouse, these gases collect in the atmosphere and create a barrier that prevent
、s the earths excess heat from escaping. As the barrier grows, the earths temperature increases. This is magnifying the natural greenhouse effect and the result is climate change. The world is warming, and the burning of fossil fuels is very likely to be blamed, according to Intergovernmental Panel o
、n Climate Change (IPCC). Slide 7: (Third cause)If you look at this slide, you can see another major man-made problem is deforestation leads to climate change. Mature forests store enormous quantities of carbon, both in the trees and vegetation itself and within the soil in the form of decaying plant
、 matter. Forests in areas such as the Congo and the Amazon represent some of the worlds largest carbon stores on land. But Amazon rain forest is 7700 square miles per year dissipated. As forests are logged or burnt, that carbon is released into the atmosphere, increasing the amount of carbon dioxide
、 and other greenhouse gases and accelerating the rate of climate change. Slide 8: (First effect)There are no doubt many other reasons for man-made cause of climate change, but I think these are the reasons that stand out most. Lets move on to the effects of climate change. The first effect is rising
、 temperatures. As the Himalayan range is rising, this holds back ocean season wind from entering mid-Asia. So mid-Asia has rising temperatures that become dry, like Sinkiang in China. Peoples lives are affected because of this. There cant be normal development of agriculture, and lowered water availa
、bility can be devastating for farmers who cant keep crops alive in such dry soil. Many poor people starve to death.Slide 9: (second effect)Next, the second effect is bad health for people.Peoples health lie on nicer ecological environment, but now climate change is rather serious, especially as peop
、le constantly burn fossil fuels emitting a mass of carbon dioxide. As the earth gets warmer, diseases are able to spread easily and death count eventually increases. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the health of 1,000,000million people around the world may be put at risk by the effec
、ts of global climate change.Slide 10: (third effect)Last but not least, you can see the third effect is flooding.Deforestation can cause flooding. Coastal vegetation lessens the impact of waves and winds associated with a storm surge. Without this vegetation, coastal villages are susceptible to dama
、ging floods. The 2008 cyclone in Myanmar proved this fact to catastrophic effect. Scientists believe that the removal of coastal mangrove forests over the past decade caused the cyclone to hit it with much more force. Many houses and lives due to impact of the cycle than usual. So we need to activel
、y seek ways to control this changing climatic situation. Slide 11: (First solution)Firstly, a good idea would be government should find other energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, water energy and so on. While well undoubtedly have to rely on fossil fuels for some time to come, it is irresp
、onsible to increase oil drilling and consumption to meet our energy needs. Burning more fossil fuels will simply bring more climate change and make us more dependent on foreign oil. Our government should invest in the development of clean, 21st century technologies and support the companies that are
、 trying to bring us into a new cleaner energy age.Slide 12: (Second Solution)Another solution is people should stop cutting down trees.Improved agricultural practices along with paper recycling and forest management, balancing the amount of wood taken out with the amount of new trees growing, could
、quickly eliminate this significant chunk of emissions.ConclusionSlide 13: (Summary)Now In conclusion, let me sum up my points. There are three main reasons for climate change, Continental drift, burning of fossil fuel pollution and deforestation. Rising temperatures, bad health and flooding which le
、ad to lives being lost is rather serious. So government should take measures to reduce climate change.Slide 14: (Recommendation/ Suggestion)In my view, we can have several ways to deal with the climate change, such as governments finding a future fuels and stop the cutting of down trees.Slide 15: (P
、rediction)Thus I would like to predict if we continue to destroy our climate and dont start taking care of our earth, our earths sea levels average will go up by 0.09meter to 0.88meter between 1900 to 2100 because of global warming. Lets start saving our climate now!Slide 16: ReferencesThis is my re
