2、s, youre an old friend. Chris: Before you say anything, remember youre watching my first interview. Jake: Thats OK. Most new reporters dont do very well on their first try. Chris: What do you mean? Could you be more specific? Most television viewers dont have much patience. They want faster intervie

3、ws. They want more action - more Jake: questions - more answers - more pictures. Chris: Do you think my interview is boring? Jake: I dont think all of it is boring. Chris: You just think half of it is boring. Jake: I think some of it is boring. But I also think some of it is great, really interestin

4、g. Chris: Which part do you think is interesting? Jake: What are you doing? Chris: Im eating my lunch. Jake: Its only 10 oclock in the morning. Most people eat breakfast now. Chris: Well, I wont eat all of it now. Chris: Do you want a piece of cake? Jake: No, thanks. Chris: You can have half of my s

5、andwich. Ill eat more lunch later at lunch time. Jake: Thanks, really. I dont want any of it. Its too early in the morning for me to eat. And its definitely too early for a salami sandwich. Chris: Sorry. I eat when Im nervous. Please, Jake. I need your help on this. Jake: Dont be nervous. Im trying

6、to help you. You should have seen my first tape. It was terrible. It was so bad, they couldnt even use it. Chris: Not even part of it? Jake: No. All of it was terrible. Chris: Look, I know that youre busy and you probably dont have time for me, but. Jake: I have to admit, Im pretty busy. The new own

7、er wants me to get better ratings. Id like to have more time for so many things. Chris: Please go over my tape with me one more time and tell me how I can make it better? Jake: Sure, but first you have to do one thing. Chris: Anything. Jake: Get rid of that sandwich. I cant stand it when people eat

8、in the editing room. Chris: Its gone. - 1 - Jake: Explain once more what you were trying to do. Chris: My assignment for school was to interview people about their lives. So I thought it would be interesting to ask people whats missing in their lives. What would make their lives better. And I just a

9、sked anyone who walked by. Should I play it now? Jake: Sure. Chris: Hello, this is Chris Bloom. Today is the first day of spring. Its a time when people feel energetic. They have a new outlook on life. We decided to find out what people want out of their lives this spring. Mike: More time. I definit

10、ely want to find more time. Steven: More money and fewer financial problems. Rita: More love in my life. Thats what I want. Terry: More friends. Roger: More clothes, more money, and fewer arguments. Detective Modine: Less crime and more parking places. Terry: Less pressure and more time to enjoy lif

11、e. Chris: But the answer most people gave was time. More people want more time to accomplish their goals and enjoy their lives. Jake: Come on, Ill show you. just heard that someone wants to take over part of the Stamford Nature Center and turn it into apartment buildings. Chris: Oh, no. Boy, thats a story! Can I bring my camera? Jake: Sure. Chris: Oh, Ri

13、ght! Lesson 2 Do you like to live dangerously, Rita? Rita: Hows my favorite cameraman? Oh, my back. Mike: Those tapes were too heavy for you. Rita: A few years ago, I could carry twenty tapes if I wanted. Mike: We all get older. Rita: You know, Mike, I never thought it would come this fast. I just c

14、ant believe its time for me to retire. How did I get so old so fast? Mike: Most people dont retire at your age. You look great. Rita: I feel great. In fact, I feel marvelous. Mike: So, why are you retiring? Rita: I love my job. I love being a make up artist. But I always promised myself I would star

15、t a new life when I reached this age. Mike: I think thats terrific. There are so many things you can do with your life. Youre still young enough to enjoy yourself. - 2 - Rita: You bet I am. And there are a lot of things I can still do pretty well. I can still play tennis beautifully. Mike: Ive seen

16、you. Youre a wonderful tennis player. Rita: Im a very good swimmer. I can ski fairly well too. Mike: And you dance gracefully. Rita: Gracefully? Thats a word for an old lady, Mike. Mike: Excuse me. Youre a hot dancer. Rita: Thats more like it. Im not going to retire and sit around in a rocking chair

17、, I can tell you that. Mike: What are those? Rita: These are videos from all over the world. I can live anywhere I want now .I can do anything I want. Mike: You have a whole new life in front of you. Rita: Thats true. I want you to do me a favor. Mike: Sure. Rita: I dont have time to watch all these

18、 tapes. I cant even carry all of them. Can you edit these onto a shorter tape? I want to show them to Terry so we can decide where I should go. Mike: Terry? Rita: My new boyfriend. Mike: I want to meet this Terry. Rita: Hes a nice person. Youll like him. Hes an editor and hes been doing some work on

19、 the mystery program. Murder at Midnight. Mike: Any friend of yours is a friend of mine. Rita: Thanks, Mike.Hey, look at all these places I can go. Singapore, Grand Turk Island, the Bahamas, Italy, Mexico. Mike: Rita, these tapes are fabulous. This tape is about Grand Turk Island. This may be the sp

20、ot where Christopher Columbus reached America. Look at that beautiful beach! You could live comfortably here and never have another worry.A lot of tourists arrive in Grand Turk Island every week.They come here to relax.and have a good time. But the best thing here is the scuba diving.If you like to

21、dive, this is the place for you.Look at her. Shes so graceful. Doesnt she swim beautifully?.Do you like to live dangerously, Tita? Well, it can be dangerous under water.Dont touch that. Itll hurt you.The scuba divers love the water here at Grand Turk, but theyre also careful about what they touch an

22、d where they swim. Ive been to Grand Turk, Rita. Youd love it for a year or two. But it might be too quiet for you. There are no nightclubs. No discotheques. Watch this next tape if you want something fun! Lesson 3 Were experiencing technical difficulties. Mike: Grand Turk Island may be too quiet fo

23、r you, Rita. If you want more excitement, heres Singapore. This is the mysterious Orient.The food is the best in the world.The people are interesting. They come from all over the - 3 - world.But Singapore is crowded, and you cant live here cheaply, Rita. Singapore is expensive. Milan is more relaxed

24、.Its center of culture.Milan has more nightclubs and fewer problems than Singapore.And the man are very romantic, Rita. You could live here nicely. Thats all for now. I have to run. Steven: Before I say anything else, Jake, I want to compliment you. I think youre doing a fine job. Jake: Thank you. A

25、nd I think youre doing a great job too. People seem to be very happy here. Youre a good producer. By the way, I like your beard. Steven: Thanks. But I have a problem. Peter Case, my boss, the man who owns this station, hoped he could improve the ratings. Instead, our audience is disappearing. Jake:

26、What? I thought we were doing well. Steven: Bad things keep happening, Jake. For example, we showed three movies last month. They were very inexpensive and we found out why. They all had technical problems. Bad sound. Bad picture. We wont buy cheap movies anymore. Jake: I guess its like what Abe Lin

27、coln said: You can fool some of the peole all of the time; You can fool all of the people some of the time; You cant fool all the people all the time. Steven: Theres another problem. Look at these ratings. We lost half of our viewers last night. Jake: How is that possible? Steven: Everything was goi

28、ng beautifully. And then you did your story - and we lost half of our audience. Jake: In the middle of my story? Steven: In the middle of your story! Jake: Somethings going on, Steven. People dont just tune out in the middle of a story. Steven: I know. Jake: Maybe its a technical problem. Steven: Il

29、l check that. Jake: Ill ask my new editor. Have you met him? Hes very good. Steven: Who is he? Jake: Roger Ward. I went to college with him. He edited an award - winning show on Iran. Hes an excellent editor. He works quickly and professionally. Steven: Can he work well with people? Maybe he can wor

30、k with that assistant, Chris. Jake: I dont know about Chris, but Ill get something flashy for tonights news. Steven: Thanks, Jake. I knew I could count on you. Jake: In Washington today, the President made important decisions about the budget. Connie Swift is at the White House with a report on the

31、Presidents announcement. Mike: Milan has more nightclubs and fewer problems that Singapore.And the men are very romantic, Rita. You could live here nicely. Jake: Im sorry. Were experiencing technical difficulties. Obviously, that was not Connie Swift at the White House. Well have that story for you a little later in the show.
