3、ferentfrombefore.Whilemyormerteacherhadbeenpatientwithallofthestudents,mynewteacherquicklypunishedthosewhogaveincorrectanswers.Wheneverweansweredincorrectly,shepointedalongstickatusand,shakingitupanddown,shouted,No!No!No!Itdidnttakemelongtolosemyeagernesstoanswerquestions.NotonlydidIlosemyjoyinanswe
4、ringquestions,butIalsolostmydesiretosayanythingatallinEnglish.However,thatstatedidntlastlong.WhenIwenttocollege,IlearnedthatallstudentswererequiredtotakeanEnglishcourse.Unlikemyseniormiddleschoolteacher,mycollegeEnglishteacherswerepatientandkind,andnoneofthemcarriedlong,pointedsticks!Thesituationwas
5、farfromperfect,though.Asourclasseswereverylarge,Iwasonlyabletoansweracoupleofquestionsineachclassperiod.Also,afterafewweeksofclasses,InoticedthereweremanystudentswhospokemuchbetterthanIdid.Ibegantofeelintimidated.So,onceagain,althoughfordifferentreasons,Iwasafraidtospeak.ItseemedmyEnglishwasgoingtos
6、tayatthesamelevelforever.ThatwasthesituationuntilacoupleofyearslaterwhenIwasofferedanopportunitytostudyEnglishthroughanonlinecourse.Thecommunication mediumwasacomputer,aphoneline,andamodem.Isoongotaccesstothenecessaryequipment,learnedhowtousethetechnologyfromafriendandparticipatedinthevirtualclassro
7、om to daysaweek.Onlinelearningisnoteasierthanregularclassroomstudy;itrequiresalotoftime,commitmentanddisciplinetokeepupwiththeflowofthecourse.Iworkedhardtomeettheminimumstandardssetbythecourseandtocompleteassignmentsontime.Ipracticedallthetime.IcarriedalittledictionarywithmeeverywhereIwent,aswellasa

9、IrealizedIcouldunderstandjustabouteverythingIcameacross,andmostimportantly,IcouldsayanythingIwantedtoinEnglish.AlthoughIwasstillmakingmanymistakesandwascontinuallylearningnewwaystosaythings,Ihadfinallyreapedthebenefitsofallofmyhardwork.Learningaforeignlanguagehasbeenamosttryingexperienceforme,butone
10、thatIwouldnttradeforanything.Notonlydidlearninganotherlanguageteachmethevalueofhardwork,butitalsogavemeinsightsintoanotherculture,andmymindwasopenedtonewwaysofseeingthings.ThemostwonderfulresultofhavinglearnedaforeignlanguagewasthatIcouldcommunicatewithmanymorepeoplethanbefore.Talkingwithpeopleisone
11、ofmyfavoriteactivities,sobeingabletospeakanewlanguageletsmemeetnewpeople,participateinconversations,andformnew,unforgettablefriendships.NowthatIspeakaforeignlanguage,insteadofstaringintospacewhenEnglishisbeingspoken,Icanparticipateandmakefriends.Iamabletoreachouttoothersandbridgethegapbetweenmylangu
