18、earth. Some of these eruptions are quiet. Others are violently explosive. Either way, volcanoes can be very dangerous. Since 1700, more than 250,000 people have been killed by volcanic activities. Entire towns have been wiped out. Many acres of forests and farmlands have been ruined. The most destru

20、famine. Another damaging eruption also occurred in Indonesia. In 1883, Krakatoa erupted violently. The biggest danger from this eruption was the tsunami that followed. Krakatoas crater fell down in the explosion. Part of it sunk below sea level. A wall of water over thirty meters high killed over 35

21、,000 people. Indonesia has also been the scene of other dangerous volcanic eruptions. In 1882, the eruption of Gulunggung killed over four thousand people. In 1919, Kelut erupted, killing more than five thousand people. Most of the deaths in these two eruptions were from dangerous mudflows. Mount Pe

22、lee in Mrtinique erupted in 1902. Almost 30,000 people were killed as a result of ash flows. Mudflows during the eruption of Ruiz in Columbia in 1985 killed over 25,000 people. Can scientists predict eruption and help prevent deaths from volcanoes? There are some ways to sometimes tell that an erupt

23、ion is going to occur. Many small earthquakes may occur near the volcano. Different gases will come out of it. Sometimes a volcano might even change shape.
