Fall 2010 Course Description and GoalsThis course is an introduction to the principle concepts of reading in American & British news publications. With a focus on concepts, thi
3、s course prepares students to apply journalism to the reading where students will not only become aware of the great, controversial, and critical ideas contained in America and British news media reports, but also examine the interactions between the news reporters purpose, subjects, and audience ex
4、pectations.The purpose of this course is to expose students to a broad spectrum of Western news media, thought, politics, religion, philosophy, etc., in order to gain a greater understanding of the English language and Western cultural journalism. In addition to an intense examination of reading in
5、American & British news publications, students will be expected to summarize, analyze, and evaluate the course materials. Assignments will consist of expository, personal, and persuasive writing, vocabulary development, and research and analysis. Most writing assignments and projects will involve an
6、 exploration and analysis based on the proper reading chapters. As you read these challenging materials, you not only will expand your vocabulary and your ability to extract meaning from sophisticated news reports, but also will learn to infer important information about audience and purpose, thus p
7、reparing yourself to interpret the complex, often veiled messages you encounter in politics, business, and the society. 8、 book chapters. I will distribute these in class and / or make them available on Blackboard. Internet access to our Blackboard course shell, at least once weekly. The Blackboard shell includes materials that will complement your study of reading in American & British news publications. In addition,
9、I will frequently post my weekly lectures there, as well as review materials for the exams.GradingDetails of the assignments will be explained in class. Final grades will be determined as follows:Summary and Response (4 times) 15%Weekly reading assignment 15%Newspaper editing project (Team work) 20%
