6、 roles in English. The number of English prepositions is small, but they are used very frequently. It is very hard to learn English prepositions because their complicated applications and polysemy. Whats more, there is a large number of linguistic differences between English and Chinese, which makes
7、 the language acquisition harder. This thesis combines abstract translation theories, prepositions features, and specific context to illustrate English prepositions, their specific usage and translation methods. Therefore, English prepositions definition, classification, collocation, functions and f
8、eatures are introduced. Besides, it displays conversion, division, negation, amplification, omission and other translation methods of prepositions as well. The thesis aims at sorting out Chinese translational methods of English prepositions and helping Chinese learners and translators to solve probl

Key words: English prepositions; functions; classification; features; translation of prepositions 摘 要在英语中,介词又称前置词,属于虚词,却在英语中起着极其重要的作用。介词数量不多,但其使用频率极高,几乎每个英语句子中都有介词。介词用法复杂,且有一词多意的特点,本身就难以掌握,加上英汉语言存在差异,更加大了中国学习者学习英语的难度。本文将结合抽象的翻译理论与介词本身的特点及具体的语境,对英语介词的具体用法及翻译方法进行分析。其中包括介词的定义、介词的分类、介词的搭配、介词的功能和介词的

13、troduction1.1 Study background English prepositions are often considered as function words. Although they are small in number, they play an important role in English. The survey of English preposition usage in some authoritative dictionaries shows that the number of the most frequently used preposit
14、ion is less than one hundred, but they are statistically frequent, functionally versatile and flexibly positional. There is a preposition in every eight words in a written text. Hence linguists often consider English as a language of prepositions. Under the influence of Chinese ideology, Chinese lea
15、rners are facing more difficulties in learning English. Some researchers have studied prepositions by setting example of one preposition or just researched one aspect of prepositions, which is not enough. This thesis studies English prepositions and their translation by combining English preposition
16、s, general methods of translation and specific context. 1.2 Study significance and purposeThere are three implications of this study:(1)This study introduces English prepositions and is good for Chinese learners and translators to know them more comprehensively so that they can apply English preposi
17、tions appropriately.(2)This study combines the preposition and translation methods, and practices prepositional translation in specific context, which can make Chinese learners and translators learn prepositional translation skills effectively and easily. (3)This study is also a contribution for Chi
18、nese learners and translators to learn the differences between English and Chinese thinking modes. In a word, this thesis aims at helping Chinese learners and translators learn English better and deal with problems more easily. 1.3 Thesis structureThis thesis includes five chapters:Chapter one is th
19、e introduction which describes the background, significance and purpose of this thesis.Chapter two is the literature review. Both prepositions and translation are reviewed, by which we can find existing problems in current studies.Chapter three is the introduction of English prepositions, which incl
20、udes the definition, form, classification, functions and features.Chapter four is the approaches of prepositional translation, in which conversion, division, negation, amplification, omission and so on are introduced.Chapter five is a conclusion, which is a summary of this study.2. Literature Review
21、2.1 Studies on prepositionsFrom the past to present, a lot of linguists and learners come from home and abroad have made a large number of researches on English prepositions. According to the version of Liu Wencheng which came out in 1981, Sara Withers and El. W. Brockman have an idea on the English
22、 preposition. They consider English prepositions as great important empty wordsthey have no lexical meaning, but they are in function of connecting the words in a sentence and in contribution of grammatical structure; they are words that connect nouns (or structures similar with nouns) and other par
23、ts of sentences(Liu Wencheng, 1981). In their eyes, prepositions have their own intrinsic meanings, but we can not make use of a preposition by using its meaning literally. People can not learn English well if they do not make a great sense of the usage and meaning of English prepositions. And it is
24、 a must to be well up in English prepositions by practice. Following John Platts idea, there are more than one hundred prepositions in English. Comparing with nouns, adjectives and verbs in English, linguists believe that prepositions are less than them in number, but they are extremely frequent in
25、using than them. Otherwise, John Platt put forward that a preposition is the first word in a prepositional phrase, and it offers place, time, or more abstract information, including relationships between words (nouns, pronouns or nominal words) or words and sentences. The prepositions have no clear
26、meanings but own language function, and play important roles in sentences(Yang Luxin, 1999). In recent years, some Chinese scholars have devoted to the study of English prepositions as well. Dai Luhua, A vice-professor, put forward that English prepositions can function as verbs and clauses(Dai Luhua, 1998). In 2000, Lin Zhenkun published one o
