11、ntlyreachingouttoextendandenlargethatfamily;liftingthemupintothewagonontheway;blacksandhispanics,andpeopleofeveryethnicgroup,andnativeamericans-allthosestrugglingtobuildtheirfamiliesandclaimsomesmallshareofamerica.fornearly50yearswecarriedthemalltonewlevelsofcomfort,andsecurity,anddignity,evenafflue
12、nce.andrememberthis,someofusinthisroomtodayarehereonlybecausethisnationhadthatkindofconfidence.anditwouldbewrongtoforgetthat.so,hereweareatthisconventiontoremindourselveswherewecomefromandtoclaimthefutureforourselvesandforourchildren.todayourgreatdemocraticparty,whichhassavedthisnationfromdepression
13、,fromfascism,fromracism,fromcorruption,iscalledupontodoitagain-thistimetosavethenationfromconfusionanddivision,fromthethreatofeventualfiscaldisaster,andmostofallfromthefearofanuclearholocaust.thatsnotgoingtobeeasy.moudallisexactlyright-itwontbeeasy.andinordertosucceed,wemustanswerouropponentspolishe
14、dandappealingrhetoricwithamoretellingreasonablenessandrationality.wemustwinthiscaseonthemerits.wemustgettheamericanpublictolookpasttheglitter,beyondtheshowmanshiptothereality,thehardsubstanceofthings.andwelldoitnotsomuchwithspeechesthatsoundgoodaswithspeechesthataregoodandsound;notsomuchwithspeeches
15、thatwillbringpeopletotheirfeetaswithspeechesthatwillbringpeopletotheirsenses.wemustmake-wemustmaketheamericanpeoplehearourtaleoftwocities.wemustconvincethemthatwedonthavetosettlefortwocities,thatwecanhaveonecity,indivisible,shiningforallofitspeople.now,wewillhavenochancetodothatifwhatcomesoutofthisc
