3、ethattheUnitedStatesplacesonourrelatiohipwithChina.Iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecenteialyearofyouruniversity.Gongxi,Beida.（Alause.）AsI#msureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoYenchingUniversitywhichwasfoundedbyAmericanmiionaries.

4、ManyofitswonderfulbuildingsweredesignedbyanAmericanarchitect.ThousandsofAmericastudentsandprofeorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.Wefeelaecialkihipwithyou.Iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantreectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.InJuneof1919,thefirstPresidentofYenchingUniversit

5、y,JohnLeightonStuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddreontheseverygrounds.Attheaointedhour,heaeared,butnostudentsaeared.TheywerealloutleadingtheMay4thMovementforChina#spoliticalandculturalrenewal.WhenIreadthis,IhopedthatwhenIwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someonewouldbesittinghere.AndIthanky

6、ouforbeinghere,verymuch.（Alause.）Overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000students.YourgraduatesarereadthroughoutChinaandaroundtheworld.YouhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofAsia.Lastyear,20percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.Andin

7、thisaiversaryyear,morethanamillionpeopleinChina,Asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.Atthedawnofanewcentury,thisuniversityisleadingChinaintothefuture.Icomeheretodaytotalktoyou,thenextgenerationofChina#sleaders,aboutthecriticalimportancetoyourfutureofbuildingastrongpartnershipbetweenChinaandtheUni

8、tedStates.TheAmericanpeopledeeplyadmireChinaforitsthousandsofyearsofcontributiotocultureandreligion,tophiloso # # #phyandthearts,toscienceandtechnology.WerememberwellourstrongpartnershipinWorldWarII.NowweseeChinaatamomentinhistorywhenyourgloriouspastismatchedbyyourpresentsweepingtraformationandtheev

9、engreaterpromiseofyourfuture.Justthreedecadesago,Chinawasvirtuallyshutofffromtheworld.Now,Chinaisamemberofmorethan1,000internationalorganizatio-ente# rprisesthataffecteverythingfromairtraveltoagriculturaldevelopment.Youhaveopenedyournationtotradeandinvestmentonalargescale.Today,40,000youngChinesestu

10、dyintheUnitedStates,withhundredsofthousandsmorelearninginAsia,Africa,Europe,andLatinAmerica.Yoursocialandeconomictraformationhasbeenevenmoreremarkable,movingfromaclosedcommandeconomicsystemtoadriving,increasinglymarket-basedanddriveneconomy,generatingtwodecadesofurecedentedgrowth,givingpeoplegreater

11、freedomtotravelwithinandoutsideChina,tovoteinvillageelectio,toownahome,chooseajob,attendabetterschool.Asaresultyouhaveliftedliterallyhundredsofmillioofpeoplefrompoverty.Percapitaincomehasmorethandoubledinthelastdecade.MostChinesepeopleareleadinglivestheycouldnothaveimaginedjust20yearsago.Ofcourse,th

12、esechangeshavealsobroughtdisruptioinsettledpatteroflifeandwork,andhaveimposedenormousstraionyourenvironment.OnceeveryurbanChinesewasguaranteedemploymentinastateenterprise.Nowyoumustcompeteinajobmarket.OnceaChineseworkerhadonlytomeetthedemandsofacentralplaerinBeijing.Nowtheglobaleconomymeaallmustmatc

13、hthequalityandcreativityoftherestoftheworld.Forthosewholacktherighttrainingandskillsandsuort,thisnewworldcanbedaunting.Intheshort-term,good,hardworkingpeople-some,atleastwillfindthemselvesunemployed.And,asallofyoucansee,therehavebeenenormousenvironmentalandeconomicandhealthcarecoststothedevelopmentp

14、atternandtheenergyusepatternofthelast20years-fromairpollutiontodeforestationtoacidrainandwatershortage.Inthefaceofthesechallengesnewsystemsoftrainingandsocialsecuritywillhavetobedevised,andnewenvironmentalpoliciesandtechnologieswillhavetobeintroducedwiththegoalofgrowingyoureconomywhileimprovingtheen

15、vironment.EverythingIknowabouttheintelligence,theingenuity,theenterpriseoftheChinesepeopleandeverythingIhaveheardtheselastfewdaysinmydiscuiowithPresidentJiang,PrimeMinisterZhuandothersgivemeconfidencethatyouwillsucceed.AsyoubuildanewChina,Americawantstobuildanewrelatiohipwithyou.WewantChinatobesucce

16、ful,secureandopen,workingwithusforamorepeacefulandproerousworld.IknowtherearethoseinChinaandtheUnitedStateswhoquestionwhethercloserrelatiobetweenourcountriesisagoodthing.Buteverythingallofusknowaboutthewaytheworldischangingandthechallengesyourgenerationwillfacetellusthatourtwonatiowillbefarbetteroff

17、workingtogetherthanapart.ThelateDengXiaopingcoueledustoseektruthfromfacts.Atthedawnofthenewcentury,thefactsareclear.Thedistancebetweenourtwonatio,indeed,betweenanynatio,isshrinking.WhereonceanAmericancliershiptookmonthstocrofromChinatotheUnitedStates.Today,technologyhasmadeusallvirtualneighbors.From

18、laptotolasers,frommicrochitomegabytes,aninformationrevolutionislightingthelandscapeofhumanknowledge,bringingusallclosertogether.Ideas,information,andmoneycrotheplanetatthestrokeofacomputerkey,bringingwiththemextraordinaryoortunitiestocreatewealth,topreventandconquerdisease,tofostergreaterunderstandi

19、ngamongpeoplesofdifferenthistoriesanddifferentcultures.Butwealsoknowthatthisgreateropeeandfasterchangemeanthatproblemswhichstartbeyondonenatioborderscanquicklymoveiidethem-thereadofweapoofmadestruction,thethreatsoforganizedcrimeanddrugtrafficking,ofenvironmentaldegradation,andsevereeconomicdislocati

20、on.Nonationcanisolateitselffromtheseproblems,andnonationcansolvethemalone.We,eeciallytheyoungergeneratioofChinaandtheUnitedStates,mustmakecommoncauseofourcommonchallenges,sothatwecan,together,shapeanewcenturyofbrilliantpoibilities.Inthe21stcentury-yourcentury-ChinaandtheUnitedStateswillfacethechalle

21、ngeofsecurityinAsia.OntheKoreanPeniula,whereoncewewereadversaries,todayweareworkingtogetherforapermanentpeaceandafuturefreerofnuclearweapo.OntheIndiansubcontinent,justasmostoftherestoftheworldismovingawayfromnucleardanger,IndiaandPakistanriskarkinganewarmsrace.WearenowpursuingacommonstrategytomoveIn

22、diaandPakistanawayfromfurthertestingandtowardadialoguetoresolvetheirdifferences.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationmustfacethechallengeofstoingthereadofdeadliernuclear,chemical,andbiologicalweapo.Inthewronghandsorthewrongplaces,theseweapocanthreatenthepeaceofnatiolargeandsmall.Increasingly,ChinaandtheUn

23、itedStatesagreeontheimportanceofstoingproliferation.Thatiswhywearebegiingtoactinconcerttocontroltheworldsmostdangerousweapo.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationwillhavetoreversetheinternationaltideofcrimeanddrugs.Aroundtheworld,organizedcrimeropeopleofbillioofdollarseveryyearandunderminestrustingovernmen

24、t.Americaknowsallaboutthedevastationanddeairthatdrugscanbringtoschoolsandneighborhoods.Withbordersonmorethanadozencountries,Chinahasbecomeacroroadforsmugglersofallkinds.Lastyear,PresidentJiangandIaskedseniorChineseandAmericanlawenforcementofficialstostepupourcooperationagaitthesepredators,tostopmone

25、yfrombeinglaundered,tostopaliefrombeingcruellysmuggled,tostopcurrenciesfrombeingunderminedbycounterfeiting.Justthismonth,ourdrugenforcementagencyopenedanofficeinBeijing,andsoonChinesecounternarcoticsexpertswillbeworkingoutofWashington.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationmustmakeityourmiiontoeurethattoday

26、#sprogredoesnotcomeattomorrow#sexpee.China#sremarkablegrowthinthelasttwodecadeshascomewithatoxiccost,pollutantsthatfoulthewateryoudrinkandtheairyoubreathe-thecostisnotonlyenvironmental,itisalsoseriousintermsofthehealthcoequencesofyourpeopleandintermsofthedragoneconomicgrowth.Environmentalproblemsare

27、alsoincreasinglyglobalaswellasnational.Forexample,inthenearfuture,ifpresentenergyusepatterpersist,ChinawillovertaketheUnitedStatesastheworld#slargestemitterofgreenhousegases,thegaseswhicharetheprincipalcauseofglobalwarming.Ifthenatiooftheworlddonotreducethegaseswhicharecausingglobalwarming,sometimei

28、nthenextcenturythereisaseriousriskofdramaticchangesinclimatewhichwillchangethewayweliveandthewaywework,whichcouldliterallyburysomeislandnatioundermountaiofwaterandunderminetheeconomicandsocialfabricofnatio.Wemustworktogether.WeAmericaknowfromourownexperiencethatitispoibletogrowaneconomywhileimprovin

29、gtheenvironment.Wemustdothattogetherforourselvesandfortheworld.BuildingontheworkthatourVicePresident,AlGore,hasdonepreviouslywiththeChinesegovernment,PresidentJiangandIareworkingtogetheronwaystobringAmericancleanenergytechnologytohelpimproveairqualityandgrowtheChineseeconomyatthesametime.ButIwillsay

30、thisagain-thisisnotonmyremarks-yourgenerationmustdomoreaboutthis.Thisisahugechallengeforyou,fortheAmericanpeopleandforthefutureoftheworld.Anditmustbeaddreedattheuniversitylevel,becausepoliticalleaderswillneverbewillingtoadoptenvironmentalmeasuresiftheybelieveitwillleadtolarge-scaleunemploymentormore

31、poverty.Theevidenceisclearthatdoesnothavetohaen.Youwillactuallyhavemorerapideconomicgrowthandbetterpayingjo,leadingtohigherlevelsofeducationandtechnologyifwedothisintheproperway.Butyouandtheuniversity,communitiesinChina,theUnitedStatesandthroughouttheworldwillhavetoleadtheway.（Alause.）Inthe21stcentu

32、ryyourgenerationmustalsoleadthechallengeofaninternationalfinancialsystemthathasnoreectfornationalborders.WhenstockmarketsfallinHongKongorJakarta,theeffectsarenolongerlocal;#theyareglobal.Thevibrantgrowthofyourowneconomyistiedclosely,therefore,totherestorationofstabilityandgrowthintheAsiaPacificregio

33、n.Chinahassteadfastlyshouldereditsreoibilitiestotheregionandtheworldinthislatestfinancialcrisis-helpingtopreventanothercycleofdangerousdevaluatio.Wemustcontinuetoworktogethertocounterthisthreattotheglobalfinancialsystemandtothegrowthandproeritywhichshouldbeembracingallofthisregion.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationwillhavearemarkableoortunitytobringtogetherthetalentsofourscienti
