The Old Man and the Sea stood out as one of the excellent books because of its vivid characterization and simple language.
5、Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize forfiction in 1952, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature two years later.It was a short novel about the old man called Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman. He fished in the sea for 84 days without catching a fish. A boy called Manolin sailed with him in the past, but
6、he was forced to leave him and fished in another boat. The old man stuck to fishing by himself and in the end, he hooked the largest giant marlin he had ever known. But the big fish was so unruly and powerful. It dragged the old man and his boat for 48 hours. The old man ate little food and lacked o
7、f sleep, so he had to bear the pain and fought against his cramped fingers. To his great excitement, he succeeded to weaken the fish to the surface and harpooned it on his third day at sea. He whipped the marlin alongside his boat on his way home because it was so big that the old man was difficult
8、to pull into the boat. But the giant marlin was unwilling to submit to authority, unfortunately, the old man found a huge marlins skeleton left after his hard work. At last, Santiago lost what he had fought for, so he continued to the sea and fought against the shack. He slept very well, dreaming of
9、 the lions and Africa again. His battle won much respect.In this novel, there were two main characters. The old and lonely man called Santiago was wise, experienced, brave and optimistic. The most impressive character of Santiago was his insistence and toughness because of his fighting against the m

Although Hemingway didnt describe the role too much, Manolin was a very important role.2 Literature ReviewThe Old Man and the Sea was very popular in the American literature. Studies on it have developed into different branches, such a
11、s: symbolism, tough man, iceberg principle, and so on. But the study on Manolin was minimal. It seemed that his role was unimportant and unrelated to the novel on the surface. As a matter of fact, the appearance of Manolin was very meaningful according to his role in the work. And among all those st
12、udies on Manolin in The Old Man and the Sea, the main viewpoints can be summarized as the following three parts.The Old Man and the Sea was the perfect expression of Hemingways quality of grace under pressure. In Yang Yuantengs study (2009:35), she pointed out that Hemingway describes the background

She also pointed out that Hemingway describes several details under the pressure to show the grace.Other scholars have also studies the theme. For instance, Wang Feng (1999:59) pointed out four levels of pressure. First was the heavy pr

On the other hand, in the first week the boy had gone to the other boat and caught three good fish, so the old mans pitiful life and the little boys pitiful life could form a
17、stark contrast. The little boy followed the old man for 40 days, but they didnt take a fish. There was no doubt that the old man was unlucky according to the fishermens opinion. It was almost put him into despair undoubtedly. The pressure forced the old man to “go far to fish”, so they had the follo
18、wing experience.According to Xu Jing (2009:97), the theme of this novel was to describe Hemingways grace under pressure. The theme was unfolded by Manolin. Manolin was a part of the old mans life both materially and spiritually. Santiago was almost independent from the social existence, so Manolin b
19、ecame the old mans voice.Grace was not a simple thing. Grace was always reflected in peoples behaviors on inner and outer especially when they were in trouble. In this novel, Manolin represented the old mans grace by an important way. Gregory Stephens and Janice Cools (2013: 79) defined the relation
20、ship between Santiago and Manolin: hope and confidence. Both the old man and Manolin draw on their memories of this experience to maintain a positive outlook. Manolin left the old man and got successful in another boat. If this happened to others, even if they did not hate Manolin, it was normal tha

Besides, Manolin helped the old man haul his gear home and bought him a cup of beer, which the old man accepted gracefully as a natural offer.Qiu Shifeng and Yang Ruping (2013:42) pointed out that the old man had

The struggle of the old man was to reveal the strong spirit with which laboring people dared to fight regardless of failure and defeat. It helped to make Manolin rise and wanted to become the person like San

They believed Hemingways description of the boys personality was actually a complement to perform the old mans character. Yang Jianzhong (2006:99) pointed out tha
