The last part is conclusion.#Chapter 1 Introduction of Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice#This chapter mainly talks about something about Jane Austen such as life, writing styles and introduces the background and primary contents of Pride and Prejudice. By analyzing the
6、writer and the novel, it will be easy for the thesis to illustrate the language features of Pride and Prejudice.#1.1 A Brief Introduction to Jane Austen#1.1.1 Her Life#Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, England and she passed away in 1817. During her 40 years lifetime, she never
7、 got married. She began to write when she was still a teenager and completed the original manuscript of First Impressions which was later entitled Pride and Prejudice between 1796 and 1797. A publisher refused the manuscript, and until 1809, Austen began to revise the manuscript in order to bring it
8、 to the final form. Pride and Prejudice was published in January 1813, two years later than Sense and Sensibility- her first novel, and it became popular all over the world which has endured to today. Austen also wrote other four novels:# Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. The l
9、ast two were published after her death in 1818. During Austens life, however, nobody except her family knew her authorship of these novels. At one point, she always wrote behind a door, when visitors got closed that this creaking warning would be enough for her to hide manuscripts before anyone ente

At that time, English society associated a females entrance into the public sphere with a reprehensible loss of femininity, she published her novels anonymously which prevented her acquiring an authorial reputation, but it enabled her to preserve her privacy. Additionally, Austen may h
11、ave been anonymous under the pressure of the more general atmosphere of repression pervading her era.#As she wrote anonymously, she was not famous during her lifetime. While after her death, her popularity and reputation all over the world have been ever on increase.#1.1.2 Her Writing Style# Out of
12、living in the rural area, the surrounding of Jane Austen was tranquil and comfortable, besides, the people she met were priests and small or middle landlords. Her works are mainly about the love and marriage between gentlemen and gentlewomen without so many extreme social conflicts. There is hardly
13、any aristocrat or a poor peasant as her major character. She only wrote the things that she was familiar with, but she rarely ventured into areas where she knew little about. Her limitation proclaimed a principle in literary creation that one can show ones best when one makes the best of ones best k
14、nowledge. Scott appreciated her gift for portraying ordinary people in a fantastic way. Her vision of real life as lived in a particular segment of society has placed her as part of “Great Tradition” of the English novel, i.e. realism. #Austens writing style is the mixture of romanticism and neoclas
15、sicism. Neoclassicism advocates rationality and self-repression in writing, which is logical and follows a structured form. Romanticism advocates passion and imagination in writing, which is emotional and follows a flowing form. It may seem impossible to mix these two styles, but Austen has strong t
16、alents to put neoclassicism and romanticism together.#Austens delicate and terse prose, her moral judgment, her intelligence and her vivid character portrayal are among all her numerous strengthens. Whats more, she used her sharp and sarcastic wit in all of her writing. She could come up with a powerful and dramatic scene on one page but change it into a biting and satirical scene on the next page.
