5、itsresidentsspewoutintotheair.Andthecorrelation,ofcourse,isthatdenserplacestendtohaveloweremissions-whichisntreallyallthatdifficulttofigureout,ifyouthinkaboutit.TheshareablefutureofcitiesBasically,wesubstitute,inourlives,accesstothethingswewant.Wegooutthereandwehopinourcarsandwedrivefromplacetoplace

6、.Andwerebasicallyusingmobilitytogettheaccessweneed.Butwhenweliveinadensercommunity,suddenlywhatwefind,ofcourse,isthatthethingsweneedarecloseby.Andsincethemostsustainabletripisthe one that you never had to make in the firstplace,suddenly our lives become instantly moresustainable.And it is possible,o

7、f course,toincreasethedensityofthecommunitiesaroundus.TheshareablefutureofcitiesSomeplacesaredoingthiswithnewecodistricts,developingwholenewsustainableneighborhoods,whichisniceworkifyoucangetit,butmostofthetime,whatweretalkingaboutis,infact,reweavingtheurbanfabricthatwealreadyhave.Soweretalkingabout

8、thingslikeinfilldevelopment:#really sharp little changes to wherewehavebuildings,whereweredeveloping.Urbanretrofitting:#creating different sorts of spaces andusesoutofplacesthatarealreadythereTheshareablefutureofcitiesUrban retrofitting:#creating different sortsof spaces and uses out of places that

9、arealreadythere.Increasingly,wererealizingthatwedontevenneedtodensifyanentirecity.What we need instead is an averagedensity that rises to a level where we dontdrive as much and so on.And that can bedone by raising the density in very specificspotsawholelot.TheshareablefutureofcitiesIncreasingly,were

10、realizingthatwedontevenneed to densify an entire city.What we needinsteadisanaveragedensitythatrisestoalevelwherewedontdriveasmuchandsoon.Andthatcanbedonebyraisingthedensityinveryspecificspotsawholelot.Soyoucanthinkofitastentpolesthatactuallyraisethedensityoftheentirecity.TheshareablefutureofcitiesN

11、owallofthesearefineprojects,buttheyreallyhavemissedanessentialpoint,whichisitsnotabout the leaves above,its about the systemsbelow.Do they,for instance,capture rainwater so thatwe can reduce water use?#Water is energyintensive.Dothey,perhaps,includegreeninfrastructure,sothat we can take runoff and w

12、ater thats goingoutofourhousesandcleanitandfilteritandgrowurbanstreettrees?#TheshareablefutureofcitiesDotheyconnectusbacktotheecosystemsaroundusby,for example,connecting us to rivers and allowing forrestoration?#Do they allow for pollination,pollinator pathways thatbees and butterflies and such can

13、come back into ourcities?#Dotheyeventaketheverywastematterthatwehavefromfoodandfiberandsoforth,andturnitbackintosoilandsequester carbon-take carbon out of the air in theprocessofusingourcities?#TheshareablefutureofcitiesBecause right now,our economy by and largeoperates as Paul Hawken said,by steali

14、ng thefuture,sellingitinthepresentandcallingitGDP.And if we have another eight billion or sevenbillion,or six billion,even,people,living on aplanetwheretheircitiesalsostealthefuture,weregoingtorunoutoffuturereallyfast.Butifwethinkdifferently,Ithinkthat,infact,wecanhavecitiesthat are not only zero emissions,but haveunlimitedpossibilitiesaswell.
