2、risnotthecolorsofourskinorthetenetsofourfaithortheoriginsofournames.whatmakesusexceptionalwhatmakesusamericanisourallegiancetoanidea,articulatedinadeclarationmademorethantwocenturiesago:“weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheircreatorwithcertainunalienabl

3、erights,thatamongtheseareLife,Liberty,andthepursuitofHappiness.”Todaywecontinueanever-endingjourney,tobridgethemeaningofthosewordswiththerealitiesofourtime.Forhistorytellsusthatwhilethesetruthsmaybeself-evident,theyhaveneverbeenself-executing;thatwhilefreedomisagiftfromGod,itmustbesecuredbyHispeople

4、hereonEarth.Thepatriotsof1776didnotfighttoreplacethetyrannyofakingwiththeprivilegesofafewortheruleofamob.TheygavetousaRepublic,agovernmentof,1andby,andforthepeople,entrustingeachgenerationtokeepsafeourfoundingcreed.Formorethantwohundredyears,wehave.Throughblooddrawnbylashandblooddrawnbysword,welearn

5、edthatnounionfoundedontheprinciplesoflibertyandequalitycouldsurvivehalf-slaveandhalf-free.wemadeourselvesanew,andvowedtomoveforwardtogether.Together,wedeterminedthatamoderneconomyrequiresrailroadsandhighwaystospeedtravelandcommerce;schoolsandcollegestotrainourworkers。Together,wediscoveredthatafreema

6、rketonlythriveswhentherearerulestoensurecompetitionandfairplay.Together,weresolvedthatagreatnationmustcareforthevulnerable,andprotectitspeoplefromlifesworsthazardsandmisfortune.Throughitall,wehaveneverrelinquishedourskepticismofcentralauthority,norhavewesuccumbedtothefictionthatallsocietysillscanbec

7、uredthroughgovernmentalone.ourcelebrationofinitiativeandenterprise;ourinsistenceonhardworkandpersonalresponsibility,theseareconstantsinourcharacter.Butwehavealwaysunderstoodthatwhentimeschange,somustwe;thatfidelitytoourfoundingprinciplesrequiresnewresponsestonewchallenges;thatpreservingourindividual

8、freedomsultimately2requirescollectiveaction.Fortheamericanpeoplecannomoremeetthedemandsoftodaysworldbyactingalonethanamericansoldierscouldhavemettheforcesoffascismorcommunismwithmusketsandmilitias.nosinglepersoncantrainallthemathandscienceteacherswellneedtoequipourchildrenforthefuture,orbuildtheroad

9、sandnetworksandresearchlabsthatwillbringnewjobsandbusinessestoourshores.now,morethanever,wemustdothesethingstogether,asonenation,andonepeople.Thisgenerationofamericanshasbeentestedbycrisesthatsteeledourresolveandprovedourresilience.adecadeofwarisnowending.aneconomicrecoveryhasbegun.americaspossibili

10、tiesarelimitless,forwepossessallthequalitiesthatthisworldwithoutboundariesdemands:youthanddrive;diversityandopenness;anendlesscapacityforriskandagiftforreinvention.myfellowamericans,wearemadeforthismoment,andwewillseizeitsolongasweseizeittogether.Forwe,thepeople,understandthatourcountrycannotsucceed

11、whenashrinkingfewdoverywellandagrowingmanybarelymakeit.webelievethatamericasprosperitymustrestuponthebroadshouldersofarisingmiddleclass.weknowthatamericathriveswheneverypersoncanfindindependenceandprideintheirwork;whenthewagesofhonestlaborliberatefamiliesfromthebrinkofhardship.wearetruetoourcreedwhe

12、nalittlegirlbornintothebleakest3povertyknowsthatshehasthesamechancetosucceedasanybodyelse,becausesheisanamerican,sheisfree,andsheisequal,notjustintheeyesofGodbutalsoinourown.weunderstandthatoutwornprogramsareinadequatetotheneedsofourtime.wemustharnessnewideasandtechnologytoremakeourgovernment,revamp

13、ourtaxcode,reformourschools,andempowerourcitizenswiththeskillstheyneedtoworkharder,learnmore,andreachhigher.Butwhilethemeanswillchange,ourpurposeendures:anationthatrewardstheeffortanddeterminationofeverysingleamerican.Thatiswhatthismomentrequires.Thatiswhatwillgiverealmeaningtoourcreed.we,thepeople,

14、stillbelievethateverycitizendeservesabasicmeasureofsecurityanddignity.wemustmakethehardchoicestoreducethecostofhealthcareandthesizeofourdeficit.Butwerejectthebeliefthatamericamustchoosebetweencaringforthegenerationthatbuiltthiscountryandinvestinginthegenerationthatwillbuilditsfuture.Forwerememberthe

15、lessonsofourpast,whentwilightyearswerespentinpoverty,andparentsofachildwithadisabilityhadnowheretoturn.wedonotbelievethatinthiscountry,freedomisreservedforthelucky,orhappinessforthefew.werecognizethatnomatterhowresponsiblyweliveourlives,anyoneofus,atanytime,mayfaceajobloss,orasuddenillness,orahomesw

16、eptawayinaterriblestorm.Thecommitmentswemake4toeachotherthroughmedicare,andmedicaid,andSocialSecuritythesethingsdonotsapourinitiative;theystrengthenus.Theydonotmakeusanationoftakers;theyfreeustotaketherisksthatmakethiscountrygreat.we,thepeople,stillbelievethatourobligationsasamericansarenotjusttoourselves,buttoallposterity.wewillrespondtothethreatofclimatechange,knowingthatthefailuretodosowouldbetrayourchildrenandfu
