4、中固有的矛盾。悲剧在欧亨利的作品中很少出现，总是用幽默贯穿全篇，欧亨利式出人意料的结局,都是富有人性的结局。这一风格被誉为“含泪微笑的幽默”。本文试图通过剖析欧亨利短篇小说中结尾的特征及其所达到的艺术效果进行探究。本文由五部分组成。首先，简要论文的研究背景、目的和意义。其次介绍欧亨利和他的短篇小说的相关信息。然后探讨了欧亨利独特的结尾的主要特征，其意料之外、情理之中的结尾方式并带给人无限的遐想。紧接着分析和讨论了欧亨利独特的结尾反映出来的宿命论，及其中体现出的艺术效果，如：“含泪的微笑”、黑色幽默以及发人深省。最后是结论，总结全文主要内容，并重申论文的研究意义。希望本文的研究能帮助读者对欧亨利

5、的作品有一个更好的欣赏和更深刻的解读。关键词：欧亨利；短篇小说；结尾;特征；效果 AbstractOHenry is a famous American writer of critical realism, and his short stories are renowned in the world, so he is known as the “king of the short story”. His novels are involved in ways of the world, so his works mostly take human nature as the theme

6、to reflect the inherent contradiction in life. Tragedy rarely appears in OHenrys works, and he always uses humor throughout the whole stories and his endings beyond all expectations are all humanistic. This style is known as humor of “smile with tears”. This paper tries to analyze the creating featu

7、res of the endings in OHenrys short stories so as to discuss the beauty and the artistical effects generated from the endings.This paper consists of five parts. First briefly states the research backgrounds, purpose and the significance of this study. The second part introduces OHenry and related in

8、formation to his short stories. Then discusses the unique writing style of the surprising but logical endings in OHenrys short stories, and its endless thinking brought by the endings. The next part carries on an analysis and discussion of the fatalism of OHenry and the artistic effects reflected fr

9、om his unique story-endings, including: tearful smile effects, black humor effects and thought-provoking effects. The last part is the conclusion to summarize the full text and restates the significance of this study. It is hoped that this study could help readers to have a better appreciation and m

IntroductionOHenry is a famous American writer of critical realism, and his short stories are renowned in the world, so he is known as the “king of the short story”. 12、ile with tears”.（Adcock, 2007: 73）As for studies on OHenrys works, many critics focus on his unique writing techniques, such as a surprise ending, and his humanity theme. Based on these studies, this paper tries to discuss the virtue and the weakness of human nature and the humanity reflected by the

13、 characters in OHenrys works, and to probe into the universal humanity in OHenrys stories.His short stories are well known for an unexpected ending, witty narration, intricate plot and tearful smiling writing style. However, what makes his works outstanding is the intricate beauty described in his s

14、tories.Above all, the contradictions such as rational and emotional, and mingling of gains and losses actually win his stories victory.The originality of this paper lies in the following two aspects. Firstly, this thesis is to discusses the unique writing style of the surprising but logical endings
