JohnQuincyAdamsbeganhiscareerastheU.S.ministertotheNetherlandsin1794.Afterthat,theyoungerAdamsrejoineddiplomaticserviceunderPresidentJamesMadison.AssecretaryofstateunderJamesMonroe,Adamsplayedakeyroleindeterminingthepresident’sforeignpolicy.Hewentontowinthepresidencyinanelectionin1824,andservedonlyoneterm.

AbrahamLincoln(1809—1865)

AbrahamLincolnwasthe16thpresidentoftheUnitedStatesfrom1861untilhisshockingdeathin1865.HewasborninacottageandgrewupontheAmericanfrontier,educatedhimselfbyreadingborrowedbooks,andworkedsplittingfencerailsandclerkinginageneralstore,andthenasacountrylawyer,longbeforehebecamepresident.
