At14yearsold,JamieplayedthetitleroleinBillyElliot,ahugelysuccessfulfilmaboutayoungballetdancer.Mostchildstarsprefertodistancethemselvesfromtheirearlyworkastheygrowup,butnotJamie,‘Itwasn’treallyactingtome.MyreallifeatthattimewasabitlikethatoftheboyIwasplaying,sotheawardsIwondidn’tfeellikeanachievement.Theachievementwasgettingtherole.’

HecurrentlylivesinLosAngeles,hisownchoice.‘Itwasn’tnew.I’dbeencomingheresinceIwastiny.It’safilmindustrytown,whichI’mcomfortablewith.’Whennotmakingmoviesheexploresthecoast,playscomputergamesorwalkshisdog.ItseemsperfectforJamie–acitywherealmosteveryoneisinthesamebusiness.JamieisakeensupporterofBritishfootballclubArsenal,whichmightsuggestafamilytradition.ButaccordingtoJamie,hefirstgotinterestedinfootballbecausehewantedtobeacceptedatschool.‘Asadancer,Ihadnoideaaboutfootball,soIboughtafootballstickerbook,andstudiedeverypage.ThenIaskedmymumtogetmeafootballshirt,andsheboughtaredArsenalone,sothatwasit.’Itdidn’toccurtohimtosimplypickthelocalteam.Iftherewaseveranobviouspathtofollow,Jamieavoidedit,althoughhesaysheisnowaproperfan.

Theinventorofthetrampoline

GeorgeNissenwasaprolificandsometimeseccentricinventor,responsibleforalargenumberofunusualinventions,butheisbestknownforhisfirst,thetrampoline.

Hislife-changingideawasformulatedwhen,asaschoolboy,hevisitedtouringcircuses.Hegazedinamazementastrapezeartistsperformedtheirdaringstunts.[9]()Thisnotionstayedwithhimandlaterbecameareality.

Nissentookupgymnasticsanddivingwhenhewasyoung.In1933,hestartedattheUniversityofIowa.Itwasduringhistimetherethathegottoknowhisgymnasticscoach,LarryGriswold,anddiscussedhisideaswithhim.[10]()Thishappenedin1941.

Whilestillatschool,Nissenhadstaredexperimentinginthefamilygarage,usingmetalfromthelocaljunkyardforaframeandstrongclothfromatentmaker,withstripsofmaterialfromoldcartyrestoattachtheclothtotheframe.Atuniversity,heandGriswolddevelopedthisidea[11]()Thebouncingrig,astheycalledit,provedhugelysuccessfulthereandthey

begantobelievethatitcouldhaveacommercialfuture.

Afteruniversity,Nissenwantedabreakandabitoffun,sohetouredwithtwoofhisfriends,performinganacrobaticshowatfairsintheUSandinMexico.[12]()Thisprovedverypopular,andasintended,generatedcommercialinterest.

Thenextstageofthedevelopmentofthetrampolinewasmarkedoutbyapublicitystuntwithakangaroo,whichNissenhiredforademonstrationinCentralPark,NewYork.Heknewthatbybouncingatoneendofthetrampoline,hecouldstartthekangaroobouncingattheother.Nissenwantedtogetaphotographofbothhimselfandthekangarooinmid-airatthesametime.[13]()Theeventwasahugesuccessandthepicturewentroundtheworld.Nissendidtoo,sellinghisproductinEurope,Japan,SouthAfricaandSouthAmerica.

Nissentriedtodevelophisinventionbycreatingbouncinggames,butthetrampoline’spopularitywasgrowingsteadilyevenwithouthishelp.[14]()Indeed,thefirstworldchampionshipstookplaceattheRoyalAlbertHall,London,in1964.Ayearlater,theInternationalTrampolineFederationwasformed.ButNissenhadtowaituntil2000forhislifetimegoaltobeachieved.Thatyear,trampoliningwasaccordedultimaterespectabilitywhenitwasincludedintheSydneyOlympicGames.

Trampoliningcontinuestogrowinpopularityaspeoplerecognisethatitisgoodforyou,aswellasbeingfun.[15]()Abrilliantgymnastinhisyouth,hecouldstilldohandstandsintohis80sandyogaheadstandsinhis90s.
