Just9%ofglobalplasticwasteisrecycled.Plasticstrawsarebynomeansthebiggestsource(来源)ofplasticpollution,butthey’verecentlycomeunderfirebecausemostpeopledon’tneedthemtodrinkwithand,becauseoftheirsmallsizeandweight,theycannotberecycled.Everystrawthat’spartofVonWong’sartworklikelycamefromadrinkthatsomeoneusedforonlyafewminutes.Oncethedrinkisgone,thestrawwilltakecenturiestodisappear.

Currently,46citiesacrossChina,arecarryingoutaprogramthataimstoputinplaceaclassification-basedgarbagedisposalsystembytheendof2020.Itishopedthatthiswillreducethequantityofwastethatendsupinlandfillsbyalargedegree.ShanghaicameintothemediafocusinearlyJulyafteritcarriedoutcompulsorygarbagesortingrulesthatthosewhofailtodisposeofgarbageproperlyshouldbefined.BeijingisreviewingitsregulationstofollowinShanghai’sfootsteps.Thenewrulesmaycauseshort-terminconveniencebuttheyaremeanttohelpresidentsfollowtheconceptofgarbageclassificationforthecommongood.
