Píngyáo）isaChinesecityandcountyincentralShanxiprovince,China.Itliesabout715kmfromBeijingand80kmfromtheprovincialcapital,Taiyuan.DuringtheQingDynasty,PingyaowasafinancialcenterofChina.Itisnowrenownedforitswell-preservedancientcitywall,andisaUNESCOWorldHeritageSite.
PingyaostillretainsitscitylayoutfromtheMingandQingdynasties,conformingtoatypicalbaguapattern.Morethan300sitesinornearthecityhaveancientruins.PreservedMing-andQing-styleresidencesnumbercloseto4,000.Thestreetsandstorefrontsstilllargelyretaintheirhistoricalappearance.
IntheSpringandAutumnPeriod,thecountybelongedtothekingdomofJin.ItwaspartofthekingdomofZhaointheWarringStatesPeriod.IntheQinDynasty,itwasknownasPingtao.DuringtheHanDynasty,itwasknownasZhongducounty.In1986,thePeople’sRepublicofChinadesignatedPingyaoasoneoftheChineseHistoricandCulturalCities.ItbecameaWorldHeritageSitein1997,includingtheoutlyingZhenguoTempleandShuanglinTemple.
