Aboutmeandtheresearchsurvey:

MynameisTaniaMiletic.IamaPhDstudentwiththeUniversityofQueensland.IaminterestedinlearningmoreaboutChineseperspectivesonpeaceandconflict.IhavestudiedpeaceandconflictapproachesinmanycountriesinAsia,(havingworkedmostlyinSouthEastAsiaoverthepast7years)andformyPhDstudies,IaminterestedinChineseopinionsandviewsaboutimportantconflictstheyfaceinChinatodayandopinionsaboutsomecommonconflictscenarios.

Conflictsarecommonacrossmanypartsoflife,theycanspanfromthepersonal,nationaltotheglobalscale.InthefieldofPeaceandConflictStudies,thereislessknowledgeaboutnon-WesternunderstandingsofconflictandespeciallyChina.ChinaplaysalargeroleintheworldtodayandsoIthinkthereisaneedforsharedunderstandingsbetweenpeopleandcountriesintheregionandtomakethedisciplineofConflictResolutionmoreculturallyrelevantinAsia.Throughusingthissurveyandaninterview,IwouldliketolearnmorefromyouaboutChineseperspectivesonconflictissuesandhowbesttoapproachconflict.

IhavebeengivenpermissionandethicalapprovalbymyAustralianUniversity–theUniversityofQueensland-andinviteyoutoparticipateinmystudyvoluntarily.Iwouldliketoinviteyouandkindlytakesometime(approximatelyonehourandahalf)todiscusssomeoftheseissueswithme.TherearenorightorwronganswersbecauseIamonlyinterestedinyourownviewsandthoughts.TheSurveyIuseisattached.Iliketodotheinterviewinperson.

Siqiisgoingtograduatefromuniversitysoon.Shedidsowellinhercoursesthatshecouldberecommendedwithexemptionforgraduatestudentswhichisadmiredbyherfellowstudents.However,Siqihasaboyfriendwhowillsoongotoworkinadifferentcitytowheretheystudy.Theyhadnotyetdiscussedwhichcitytheywouldliveinthefuture.Siqiwantedtoliveinasmallandquietcity,soforthetimeofherstudiesherboyfriendgaveupachancetoworkinBeijingforaprestigiousfirmsothattheywouldlivewhereSiqiliked.Butnow,thegirlwouldliketogoontograduatestudiesinacollegewhichisinanotherbigcityfarfromwhereherboyfriendisliving.Theboywassoangrywhenheheardherplansandnowtheyquarreleveryday.Siqiwantedtotaketheopportunitytostudyatagoodcollegesothatshewouldhaveabetterchanceatagoodjobinthecityandtocatchupwiththeboy.

Thevictim,Boy‘B’,a24-year-oldtelecommunicationsengineer,camefromapoorruraltownwherehisunemployedparentsstruggledtopaytheironlyson’stuitiontofulfilltheirhisdreamofacollegeeducationinHangzhou.Beforehisdeath,Boy‘B’wasamodernChinesesuccessstory,anexampleofhowsomeonefromarelativelypoorfamilycanriseupthroughhardworkandstudytowinacovetedwhite-collarjob.

TheimpactsentBoyB'sbodyflyingsome20yards.Bystandersandreportersquicklyconvergedonthescene,watchingassomeofBoyA’sfriendsgatheredtoconsolehim.WhileBoyAsatinthecarwithhisfaceburiedinhishands,hisfriendssmokedcigarettesandjokedaroundaspoliceandambulancecrewsarrived.
