ChattyInftyisamathematicaldocumenteditortoprovidespeech-outputaccesswhilereading,writingoreditingscientificdocuments.

ThissoftwarewasdevelopedbytheScienceAccessibilityNetProject.Ourorganizationalsooffersmanyservicestohelpvisuallydisabledpeoplewithaccessingscientificinformation.PleasevisitthewebsiteofNon-ProfitOrganization,ScienceAccessibilityNet（orsAccessNet,shortly）,

*Mathexpressionsorscientificdocumentsrangingfromsecondaryeducationtohighereducationlevelscanbewrittenoreditedbyusingthekeyboardwithspeechoutput.

*FilesmadebyChattyInftycanbesavedinvariousaccessibleformats:

LaTeX,MathML,PDF,orHTML.IML（InftyMarkupLanguage）formatisessentiallyXMLandiscompletelycompatiblewithotherInftysoftware:

themathOCR　software,"InftyReader"andtheMath-documenteditorforsightedpeople,"InftyEditor."

InformationdisplayedonthemainwindowofChattyInftyiscompletelyequivalenttothatofInftyEditor.Allofmathexpressionsaredisplayedintheordinaryprintstyle.ChattyInftyreadsaloudnotonlytextsbutalsothosemathexpressions.Visuallydisabledstudentscanaccess,writeoreditscientificdocumentsincludingmathexpressions,withspeechoutput.They,therefore,cansharethesameeducationalmaterialswiththeirclassmates.TheirteacherscaneasilypreparethosematerialsbymakingeffectiveuseofInftyReaderandInftyEditor.Furthermore,theteacherscandirectlyreaddocumentsthatvisuallydisabledstudentsdrawupeveniftheyarenotfamiliarwithBraille.

1.2SystemRequirements

TheoperatingsystemshouldbeeitherWindows2000,XPorlater.TheMicrosoftInternetExplorer6orlatermustbeinstalled.MicrosoftspeechAPIversion4mustbeinstalled.

Performsetting.exeintheChattyInftyfolderandfollowtheinstructions.Afterinstallation,youwillbeaskedtocompletetheon-lineactivation.Youcanfindinformationaboutthemonourwebsite:

3.1HowtoInput

ChattyInftyisstartedby"Text（input）mode."Inthismode,youcanwriteoreditliterarytextswiththekeyboard.Toinputmathexpressions,pressCtrl+Spacekeytoswitchtothe"Math（input）mode."Byusingthiskeystroke,youcanswitchbetween"Text"and"Math"inputmode.

Remark:

Youcanchangetheshortcuttoswitchthem,usingsettingmenu.

YoucansetupdifferentvoicesforeachoftextandmathpartswithSpeechmenu.

3.2UsingMathInputMode

Toinputcharactersorsymbolswhicharenotonthekeyboard,ChattyInftyprovidestwomethodsasfollows:

3.2.1Keyboard-basedinputmethod

Enter"\"followedbyspecificname（theTeXcommand）,thenconvertitwithSpacekeyorEnterkey.Forinstance,ifyouwanttoinputGreekletteralpha,enter\alphafromkeyboardandthenpressSpace（orEnter）key.Whenyoustartinputtingthecommand,thechoicesthathavethesameinitiallettersaredisplayed;so,youcanchooseanappropriateonefromthem.

3.2.2Menu-operation-basedinputmethod

SelectfromtheContextmenuthatpopsupbytheApplicationkey（orrightclick）.Howtodoitwillbeexplainedlater.

UptofiveCharactersrecentlyselectedaredisplayedintheContextmenu.Itmaybeconvenientwhenyouusesamecharactersrepeatedly.See"Inputreference"（Listofcharactersandsymbols）intheHelpmenuforthecharacter/symbolcommandsandtheirclassification.

ApartfromMath-modesymbols,LatincharactersetsinTextmodearealsoavailablefromthesymbolliststhatpopsupbypressingtheApplicationkey（orrightclick）.

3.3CreatingMathFormulas

3.3.1SuperscriptandSubscript

Towriteanxsquared,dothefollowing:

1.Typethebaseletter,"x".

2.PresstheUpArrowkeyorInput^（hat）.Thecursorwillmovetothesuperscriptposition,andChattyInftywillsay"power."

3.Typethe2andpresstheEnterkey.Thecursorwillreturntothebaseline.

Towriteaxsubn,dothefollowing:

1.Typethebaseletter,"x".

2.PresstheDownArrowkeyor_（Under-bar）.Thecursorwillmovetothesubscriptposition,andChattyInftywillsay"sub."

3.Typethe"n"andpresstheEnterkey.Thecursorwillreturntothebaseline.

Remark:

Usingthesettingmenu,youcanchangethesettingsothat,insteadoftheUp/Downarrowkeys,theCtrl+Up/Downarrowkeysmovesthecursortothesuper/subscriptposition.Atthattime,theUp/Downarrowkeysimplymovesthecursortotheprevious/nextline.

3.3.2SpecialCharacters

Aswasmentionedpreviously,mathematicalcharactersthatarenotonthekeyboardcanbeinputfromtheContextmenuthatpopsupbypressingtheApplicationkeyonthekeyboard,pressingShiftF10orrightclickingthemouse.IntheCharacter/Symbolset,thereisalistofmanyspecialcharacters.

TowriteaGreekletter,alpha,dothefollowing:

1.PresstheApplicationkeytoopentheContextmenu.ChattyInftysays"Contextmenu."

2.PresstheDownArrowkeyseveraltimestofindanitem,"Character,Symbol."

3.PresstheRightArrowkeytomovetothesubmenu;then,ChattyInftysays"Greek."

4.PresstheRightArrowkeytomovetotheentrylistoftheGreekletters.

5.SelectalphaandpressEnterkey.

YoucaninputavarietyofspecialcharactersfromtheContextmenu.

Towriteasymbolof"isgreaterthanorequalto",dothefollowing:

1.PresstheApplicationkeytoopentheContextmenu.ChattyInftysays"Contextmenu."

2.PresstheDownArrowkeyseveraltimestofindtheitem,"Character,Symbol."

3.3.3MathSyntax

Besidesthesuperscriptandthesubscript,therearemanyspecialnotationsinmathematics.Wecallthem"Mathematicalsyntaxes."TheycanbealsoinputfromtheContextmenu.Toinputcharacters/symbolsinaplaceotherthanabaselinesuchasfractionsmadeofadenominatorandanumerator,radicalsinwhichcharactersandsymbolsarewrittenincertainlayoutorothermathsyntaxwithsuper/subscriptaroundsymbols（asummation,forinstance）,thefollowingmethodsareprovided.

A.Keyboard-basedInputMethod

First,enter\followedbyacertainname（TeXcommand）andthen,pressthespace（orEnter）key.Thecursormovestoinsideofthesyntaxsothatyoucanentercharactersandformula.Ifyouneedtoentersuper/subscriptareainthesyntax（theindexinradicals,forinstance）,presstheright/LeftArrowkeysafterenteringthebasecharacters;then,thecursormovestothepositionsthatneedtobeinput.

B.Menu-Operation-basedInputMethod

SelectthesyntaxfromtheContextmenuthatpopsupbytheApplicationkey（ortherightclick）.PressingArrowkeystoletthecursormovetoinsideofthesyntax;then,youcanentercharactersandsymbolsinit.

Youcanreferto"Inputquickreference"（MathematicalSyntaxList）intheHelpmenutocheckeachcommandandinputmethod.
