Inmyopinion,ifwewanttotalkaboutimprovingthequalityofeducationforall,thefirstthingweshoulddoistoplacelessemphasisonrotememorizationandtest-takinginourschoolandmoreemphasisondevelopingcriticalthinkingandimportantlifeskills.Classesinallgradesshouldfeaturemorehands-on,practicallearning.Let’stakeoneexample.Wehaveallstudiedsciencefromabook.Butstudentscanalsolearnaboutitbygoingonfieldtripsandspendingtimeinnature,orvolunteeringatalocalwildlifepreserve.“learningbydoing”isagreatwaytodeveloppracticalskillsandtoapplywhatwe’velearnedinbooks.Manyhighschoolanduniversitygraduatesoftenwishthey’dhadachancetodomoreofthiskindoflearninginschool.IwishIhad!

Wealsoneedtounderstandthatbeingeducatedisaboutmorethanstudyingscience,math,andlanguages.ofcoursethesesubjectsareimportant.Butsoarepaintingandmusic.Andwhataboutlearninghowtocook,plantagarden,andmakeyourownclothes?
