Usingacomputertheresearchersmatchedsea-surfacetemperaturestolaterElNinooccurrencesbetween1980and2000andwerethenabletoanticipateE1Ninoeventsdatingbackto1857,usingpriorsea-surfacetemperatures.TheresultswerereportedinthelatestissueofthejournalNature.
Theresearcherssaytheirmethodisnotperfect,butBryanC.Weare.ameteorologistattheUniversityofCalifornia,Davis,whowasnotinvolvedinthework,saidit“suggests‘E1Ninoisindeedpredictable.”
