OnMarch27,theU.S.GovernmentscientistsmadeadecisionaftertheypredictedtheeruptionofMountSaintHelens.Theytelephonedallstatesandlocalofficialsintheareaandtoldthemthataseriouseruptionwaspossibleatanytime.Roadswereclosedtoeveryoneexceptscientistsandforestkeepersstruggledtokeepcuriousvisitorsawayfromthemountain.
ShortlyafternoononMarch27,MountSaintHelenseruptedforthefirsttimein123years,Peoplelivingnorthofthemountainheardaloudboomthatshooktheirwindows,andairlinepilotsflyingnearthevolcanosoonafterwardsdescribedathickblackcolumnofashandsteamshootingmorethan2,100metersintothesky.
Later,scientistsfoundthattheexplosionhadmadeanewcrater(大坑)inthetopofthemountain,notfarfromtheoldcrater.Thenorthsideofthepeaknowhadahugebulge(凸出部分)whererockandicehadbeenpushedoutbytheeruption.
