Abstract
Withthecontinualreformoflanguageteachingandlearningmethods,teachersofinmiddleschoolareingreatdemandtoorganizetheclassesinEnglishlearningcircumstances.However,withthelimitationofstudents’vocabulary,teachershavetosimplifytheirteachinglanguagewiththehelpoffacialexpressionsandbodymovements.Englishteachingisakindofart.Usingsomebodylanguageappropriatelycanarousethestudents’interestandimprovetheirlearningquality.ThearticlepresentsthatusingbodylanguageisanessentialteachingmethodbyexplainingtheapplicationofbodylanguageinmiddleEnglishclassroomteaching.

1.Introduction
Whenwethinkoflanguage,wetendtoconsideritintermsofthewordswesayorwrite.Tolookatlanguageintheway,however,istoignoretheimportanceoftherolethatisplayedbybodylanguage.Abereomilesays:
"Wespeakwithourvocalorgans,butweconversewithourwholebody."Inotherwords,consciouslyorunconsciously,weexpressourselvesorshowourattitudestowardsthepersonwithbodylanguage,weobserveothers'facialexpression、eyecontact、gestureandsoontomakejudgementsabouttheirpersonalitiesandmentalstates.
Classroomteaching,asanimportantsocialinteraction,inessence,isanactivityoftransmittingmessagethroughadoublechannelandaprocessofnaturallyinfluencingandpromotingbetweentheteacherandstudentsbymeansofinformationtransmission.Inotherwords,theteacherandstudentsbymeansofboththewordstheysaidorwritesandbodylanguage.Thetypeofmostbodylanguageweusedinclassroomareconsideredintermsoffacialexpression、eyecontact、gestureandsoon.
Westernscholarsbelievethatbodylanguageinclassroomplaysamoreimportantroleinthestudythanthatofaregularteachingitself.Mostresearchesstatethatitisnecessaryforteacherstolearntousebodylanguagetoenhancethequalityofclassroomteaching.LikethewordsofCoorper:
"Bodylanguageisquiteimportantforteachers.Researchershaveshownthattherelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentscanbeimprovedifteacherslearnhowtousebodylanguageinclassroomteaching."ThelinguistsStevickandBavnell(AlasteirPennycook)statedthateffectivebodylanguagecanbeagreatassettoteachersinmanagingclassroominteractionthroughlesseningtheinhibitionswhichoftenplaguestudentsandreducingteachers'talkingtime.
Newteachingtextbookbringsnewteachingideafortheteachersofmiddleschool,alsobringschallenges.Undertheguidanceofthenewcurriculumconcept,theteachingwayofmiddleschoolteachersischanging.TeachersareinagreatdemandtocreateaninterestingEnglish-learningcircumstance,whichaimstoteachtheEnglishbettertostudents.EspeciallyintheMiddleEnglishclassroom,teachingusedbybodylanguageisagreatchoice.Usinglively,infectiousbodylanguagewillhaveainteresting,practical,effectiveclass.What'smore,wecansaythattheforceofpower,control,influence,motivation,self-esteem,andinterpersonalunderstandingareallrelatedtotheinterplayofbodylanguageexchangeintheclassroom.
2.DefinitionofBodyLanguage
Whatisbodylanguage?
ItshouldbetheNonverbalsocialintercourseandtheNonverbalbehavior.Inhumansocialintercourseprocess,especiallyintheoralcommunication,peoplemakesomebodymovementwhiletalking,suchasbodyposture,countenance,gestureandsoon.Theyarealsodeliveringtheinformationbymakingasetofsystem,whichisequaltothelanguagesignalandusingthenonverbalmethodtocommunicatewithothers.Bodylanguageisexpressinghowonefeelsbythewayonesits,stands,moves,etcratherthanbywordsbodylanguageisamediumthroughwhichpeopleexpresstheirfeelingsbyfacialexpression,eyescontact,gesture,bodyaction,decentlook,bodydistance,silentaction,drawing,objectsshowingandsoon.Itcanwidentherangeofcommunication,showorconcealfeelingsandenrichlanguagestomakethemmorevividandactive.Atthesametime,itcanprovidemoreinformationanddeepenthecontent.
2.1FunctionofBodyLanguage
Althoughitisobviousthatbodylanguageisabeneficialtool,whichhelpsteachersinmiddleEnglishteaching,themostimportantthingishowtofunctionbodylanguagewellwhilecombiningverballanguageinclass.Aslongasteachersapplyitefficiently,theycanprobablyachievetheteachingaimasexpected.Itiswidelyheldthatbodylanguageservessixprimaryuniversalfunctions:
repeating,contradicting,substituting,complementing,regulatingandaccenting.
2.2Repeating
Teachersoftenusebodylanguagetorepeatapointtheyaretryingtomake.Ifyouwanttostresstwopointsaboutwhatyouaretalking,forinstance,vocabulariesorgrammar,youwillusetwofingersatthesametime.
2.2.2Contradicting
Intheclassroom,teacherscanusebodylanguageoppositefromtheliteralmeaningconveyedbyverbalmessages.Whenyouexplainawordlikesnaketoyourstudent,keepingyoureyeswidening,slack-jawedandsurprised-looking,however,youmaysay:
"Iamnotfrightened."Then,thestudentswillfinallygetadeepimpressionfortheword.
2.2.3Substituting
Teacherscanusebodylanguagetosupplantverbalmessages.InEnglishclass,theteacheroftenmeetsstudentswhodonotwanttospeak.Forexample,whentheteacherwantstoteachgrammaraboutpresentperfecttense,whichisdifficulttounderstand.Therewillbesomestudentswhoarenotconfidentandtheydarenottospeakouttheansweryouasked.Atthistime,theteachercancometothestudentsandusewarm-heartedexpressiontotaketheplaceofthesomewordswithcourage.Therewillbeabettereffectivenessintheclass.
2.2.4Complementing
Teacherscanusebodylanguagetoaddmoreinformationtoverbalmessages.AsaEnglishteacherfirstly,youmayfeelnervous.Yourstudentsmayhaveasamefeelingsandneverforgetthispoint.ThereisnodoubtthattheyneedtointroducethemselvesinEnglish,theteachershouldusevividexpressionsandgesturesasmanyaspossiblewhengreetingstudents.Theteachershouldsmilewhilesaying"Nicetomeetyou."andshaketheirhands,inthisway,whichtotallyexpressyourfriendlinesstotheirstudents.Bitbybit,thestudentslostthesenseoffearatthebeginning.Thebodylanguagecancombinetheheartsofstudentsandteachers,sostudentsfeeltheteacherisgentleandeasy-going.
2.2.5Regulating
Teachersoftenregulateandmanagecommunicationoractionbyusingsomeformofbodylanguage.Facesomestudentshavingaquitewronganswer,youcannodyourhandwithaappropriateexpressioninagreementtoindicatetotheparticipantsthatyouagreeandtheyshouldcontinuetalking.Inclassteaching,teachersshouldregulatesuccessivelythesizeandthespeedsofthevoices.Payattentiontotheuseofeyesandgestureswhenusingbodylanguage.Bodylanguageisthebestchoiceifthevoicelosesitsappealtothestudents.Ifstudentsarepaidtributeerectedthumb,gentlypattheshouldersofthestudentsmaybetentimesworththansaying"youaresogreat".
2.2.6Accenting
Teacherscanusebodylanguagetoaccentpartofthespokenmessage.ThelinguistFranklinoncesaid:
"Tellme,Iwillforget;teachme,Iwillremember;involvemeandIwilllearn."InordertoteachEnglishbetter,teachersneedtoaccentsomethingmoreimportantwhattheysaid.Youcanaccenttheimportantmessagethroughthechangingsound,someperformanceandsoon.Thestudentwillhavemoredeeperimpressiontothisinformation.
Nevertheless,thesefunctionsofbodylanguagearenotisolatedfromoneanother,andmanyoftheteachingactioncanservetwoormorefunctions—sometimessimultaneously.
2.3AnInsightintoBodyLanguage
Bodylanguageisthenon-verbalbehaviorrelatedtomovement,eitherofanypartofthebody,orthebodyasawhole.Inshortallcommunicativebodymovementsaregenerallyclassifiedasbodylanguage.Bodylanguagecommunicationisprobablyoneofthemosttalkedabout,andmostobviousnonverbalcommunicationform.Studieshaverevealedsomefascinatingfactsaboutouruseofbodylanguagecommunication.Forexample,themajorityofourcommunicationisexpressedthroughbodylanguage.AlbertMehrabain,acommunicationprofessor,discoveredthat"onlyabout7percentoftheemotionalmeaningofamessageiscommunicatedthroughexplicitverbalchannels.About38percentiscommunicatedbyparalanguage,whichisb
