WhenIgotthedrivinglicenselastsummer,MomandItookourfirsttriparoundanemptyparkinglot.ThenIfoundthatmymotherwasnotthebestteacherforme.Itwasn’tthatsheshouted,ortoldmethatIwasdoingpoorly.Asyoucanimagine,mymother’s“helpfulinstructions”onlymanagedtomakememorenervous.

SinceIcouldnolongerpracticewithher,thejobwasplacedinthehandsofmyfather.Ilovedhimdearly,butIjustdidnotregardDadassomeoneIcouldbecomfortablelearningfrom.Healmostnevertalked.Wesharedatypicalfather-daughterrelationship.He’daskhowschoolwas,andI’dsayitwasfine.Unfortunately,thatwasthemostofourconversations.Spendinghoursalonewithsomeonewhomightaswellhavebeenastrangerreallyscaredme.

Aswegotintothecarthatfirsttime,Iwasnotsurprisedatwhathappened.DadandIdrovearound,sayingalmostnothingbutafewinstructionsonhowtoturn.Asmylessonswenton,however,thingsbegantochange.DadwouldturntheradioupsoIcouldfullyappreciatehisfavoriteStonesmusic.Andheactuallybegantalking.Iwassoonhearingabout“basicbody”gymclassandotherstoriesfromhispast,includingsomeofhisfirstmeetingwithMom.

Dad’ssuddenchattinesswasshockinguntilIthoughtaboutwhyhewastellingmesomuchinthecar.InalltheyearsthatIhadwonderedwhymyfatherneverspokethatmuch,IhadneverstoppedtoconsiderthatitwasbecauseIhadneverbotheredtolisten.Homework,friends,andevenTVhadallcalledmeawayfromhimandIhadneverthoughtmyquietfatherhadanythingtosay.

SinceIbegandrivingwithhim,mydrivingskillhasgreatlyincreased.M
