InthetenprovincesandthreeterritorieswhichmakeupCanada,thereisgreatdiversityingeography.TotheeastofthePacificcoastrisethegrandRockyMountains,whicharehometohighpeaksanddeepvalleyscarvedbyiceandwater.Ancient,slow-movingglaciershugthelandandahugevarietyofwildlifewanderstheremoteforests.Theestablishmentofnationalparksmakesmanyofthesebeautifulplacesprotectedareasforthepublictovisitandenjoy,suchasBanffandJasperNationalParks.OnetrulyuniquescenicspotinCanadaisthemightyNiagaraFallswithwaterrushingoveritsedgeinasplendiddisplayofsightsandsounds.

Apartfromitsgeographicaldiversity,Canada’smanyruralareasandurbancentersreflectthediversityofitsresidents.SomeofCanada’searliestsettlers,whoarethoughttobeancestorsoftheindigenouspeoples,crossedtheBeringStraitbymeansofalandbridgefromaplacenowknownasSiberia.Theysettledonthisvastlandthousandsofyearsago.ThefirstEuropeansalsostartedtosettleinsomeoftheeasternprovincescenturiesago.Today,Canadareflectsavastcombinationofethnicbackgrounds.AboutoneoutoffivepeopleinCanada’spopulationisforeign-born.Themajorethnicgroups,forexample,includetheEnglish,ScottishandFrench,whiletheminoritygroupsincluderesidentsfromSingaporeandthePacificIslands.

Thisethnicvariety,inturn,bringsaboutculturaldiversity.Shouldyoufindyourselfinoneofthesesubcultures,languages,cuisine,architecture,artandmusicwilldefineyourencounter.Forexample,inVancouver,adynamiccitywiththehighestpercentageofChineseCanadiansinthecountry,youcanparticipateinthecelebrationsoftheChineseNewYear,oryoumaytaketeaintheDrSunYat-SenClassicalChineseGarden.InMontreal,oneofthelargestFrench-speakingcitiesintheworld,youcansamplethefoodwithatypicalFrenchflavorandseetheoriginalbuildingsintheFrenchstyleofarchitecture.Finally,ifyouarelookingforsomethingoffthebeatentrack,youmayvisitCapeBretonIslandintheprovinceofNovaScotia,whereyoucandancetofiddletunesandenjoytheculturesandtraditionsofCelticsettlers.Asyouareexposedtodiversecultures,youmayfeeltransportedthroughtimeandspace.Giventheseculturaldifferences,itcomesasnosurprisethatCanadahasbeencelebratingMulticulturalismDaysince2002.

MyparentsandIhadjustdrivendownthenarrowmountainroadfromMarrakesh,withallitssharpbends,andhadfinallyarrivedatMerzouga.BeforeusstretchedtheunendingsanddunesthatmarkedthebeginningoftheSahara.AsmallboywalkedpastwithagroupofnoisygoatsasItookalonglookattheyellowroadsidesignthattolduswewereenteringa“fragilenaturalenvironment”.ImadearesolutiontorespectandprotectthisuniquelandscapewhileIwashere.Wesetoff,ourvehiclequietlyrunningoverthesandandsmallstones.Itwasn’tlongbeforeweweresurroundedbyenormoussanddunestoweringaboveusonallsides.Thewindwasblowinggrainsofsandfromthetopsofthedunes,thesunwasbeatingdownhardandbright,andtheskywasadeepshadeofbluethatIhadneverseenbefore.Thewildbeautyofthedesertwasabouttorevealitself.Therewasnotaplanttobeseen.Thedesertappearedcompletelyempty,whichwascalmingandthreateningatthesametime.Thecoloursofthedunescontrastedstrikinglywiththeblueofthecloudlesssky.

Eventually,asthelastraysofsunlightwerefallingonthesand,wearrivedatourdesertcamp.Starswerealreadyshiningbrightlyinthedarkeningskyanditwasgettingcoldwiththeapproachofthenight.Threecamels,slowlychewing,wererestingontheirkneesandwatchingourarrivalwithinterest.“So,whichoneofyouluckyanimalswillbemyridetomorrow”IsaidoutloudasIgrabbedmybagandheadedtowardsthewarmcampfire.Iwasstarvingandrushedtoputasteakonthebarbecue.
