AbouttheCourse:
Sociologyisthestudyofhumangroups,organizations,andsocietiesandthepatternsofsimilarityanddifferenceamongthem–itgivesusawaytounderstandsocietyandunderstandwhypeopledowhattheydo.Inthiscourse,wewillexaminethemajorquestionsthatguidehowsociologiststhink.Wewillalsopractice“doing”sociologybyexploringoureverydaysocialworldandtheoftentimesinvisibleforcesthatshapeit.Sociologistsinvestigatemanytopicsandapproachtheminnumerousways.
Sociologistshavestudiedeverythingfromhowpeopletrytolooktheirbestinface-to-faceinteractions,tohowrace,genderandclassshapeidentities,tohowcapitalismcametodominatetheworld.Theyhavesoughtanswerstothepuzzlesoflifethroughallkindsofmethods–livingonthestreets,simulatingprisonconditionsonacollegecampus,collectingquestionnairesfromthousandsofrandompeople,orthroughinterviews.
Inshort,Ihopethiscoursewillintroduceanddrawyouintoadifferentwayofseeingtheworldandprovideyouwithtoolsforunderstandingyourownsocialpositionandtheconditionsinwhichyoulive.
