LondonUnderground

TheplansforbuildingtheUndergroundmetwithseveralproblemsanddelays,butthefasttrackwasfinallyopenedinJanuary1863.Asteamtrainpulledthecarsalongthefastundergroundtrackwhichwas6kilometers(3.7miles)long.About30,000peoplegotonthesubwaythefirstday.Ridersweretreatedtofortableseats(standingupwhilethetrainwasmovingwasnotallowed),andpleasantdecorationsinsideeachofthecars.However,thesmokefromtheenginesoonfilledtheairinthetunnelswithashandsoot(煤灰),aswellaschemicalgases.Fanshadtobeputinthetunnelslatertokeeptheaircleanenoughforpeopletobreathe.Evenwithitsproblems,ridingintheUndergrounddidcatchon.Itcarried9millionridersinitsfirstyear.
