Itookcomfortinthestabilityofthevalley.Drivingthroughsmallfarmcommunities,Iimaginedthefoundingfamiliesstillrootedintheirgrandhomes,generationsworkingthesamelands,neighborsremainingneighborsforgenerations.Iallowedfamiliarfarmhouselandmarkstoguideme.

Closetohome,Ioftenturnedoffthemainhighwayandtookadifferent,gettingfamiliarfarmsagainandtestingmymemory.Friendslivedinthosehouses.Ihadeatenmealsandspenttimethere;Ihadworkedonsomeofthesefarms,lendingahandduringapeakharvest,helpingafamilyfriendforadayortwo.Thehousesandlandslookedthesame,andIcouldpicturethegentlefacesandhearfamiliarvoicesasiflittlehadbeenchanged.AsIeasedintoourdrivewayI'dreturntooldways,becomingasononceagain,achildonthefamilyfarm.Myfeelingswerehonestandreal.HowIlongedforalandwherelifestoodstillandmymemoriescouldberelived.WhenIleftthefarmforcollege,Icouldonlyreturnasvisitortothevalley,atravelerlookingforhome.
