Sincethe1960s,RenaissancefairshavegrowninpopularityintheUSandCanada.Communitiesinatleast44statesandtwoCanadianprovincesnowholdannualRenaissancefairs.Over200fairsareheldeveryyear,with40inCaliforniaalone.ThefirstRenaissancefairwasstartedinthe1960sbyaschoolteacherinsouthernCalifornianamedPhyllisPatterson.Shewantedtogiveherstudentsareal-lifehistoryexperience,soshecreatedthe"RenaissanceFaire"inherbackyard.Therest,astheysay,ishistory.

SinceRenaissancefairsare"livinghistory",youmightthinktheyaredesignedtobemainlyeducational.It'struethatsomepeopletrytomakethefairsasgenuineaspossible.However,formanyothers,thekeywordisentertainment.Withallthemusiciansandmagicianswalkingabout,youwilldefinitelybeentertained.Arenaissancefairwillbeafeastforyoureyesandyourears,nottomentionyourstomach.
