ThesiteusesArtificialIntelligencedesignedbyGoogletoovercomeakeyproblemwiththesekindsofphotos:

cameratrapsproduceanastronomicalnumberofimagestomanually(手动的)analyze,saysAhumada,manyofwhichareblankimageswherethecamerawastriggeredbyitssurroundingsandnotbywildlife.Manuallysortinganddeletingthesephotosisalaborioustask.

Togetaroundthat,aftersomeoneuploadsfootagetotheWildlifeInsightsdatabase,itsAIchecksiftheimagewastakenfromacameratrapandautomaticallyremovesallblandimages.Ifthereisananimalintheimage,theAIwillidentifythespecies.

Aswellascollectingandreviewingthephotos,theplatformwillprovideanalyticsthatcouldrevealtrendsinspecies’populationfordifferentprojects.Thatinformationcouldhelpresearchersunderstandwhetheraspeciesisincreasingitsrangeorifitsnumbersaredwindling.

Whileopenaccessiskey,theplatformhastakenstepstomakesurethisinformationdoesn’tgetintothewronghands.“YouwillhavetoaskWildlifeInsightsforpermissiontogetthelocationsoftheimages,”saysAhumada.“Wewillmanagethisprocesscarefullybecauseweknowthatpoachers(偷猎者)couldusethisinformationtofindendangeredspecies.”
