TomanyinChina,receivingaLiberalArtsEducation,althoughpopularinNorthAmerica,islesspopularthanadegreewithmoredirectprofessionalprospectssuchasengineeringorfinanceandaccounting.TothinkthataninstitutionlikeBardCollegeacceptsessaysinsteadofSATscoresforitsadmissionscanbequestionableforparentsthatbasemostoftheirchild’sprospectsonhis/herperformanceontheSAT.TherealityisaliberalartseducationatoneofNorthAmerica’s500plusschools,canbeoneofthemostvaluabledegreesaChinesestudentcanobtainoverseassincetheskillsdevelopedduringthiscriticaltimeoflearningdirectlyaddressestheshortcomingsmanyHRdirectorscitewiththetalentthatexistsinChinatoday–namelythelackofimportantlifeskillssuchascriticalthinking,groupcollaborationandcreativity.

接受博雅教育在北美很普及，然而许多中国人却不大喜欢。

对他们而言，工程和金融财会之类的学位更具职业发展前景。

有些家长认为孩子的未来很大程度上取决于其SAT成绩，因此让他们考虑巴德学院这样以论文而非SAT分数作为其录取标准的学院，可能会疑虑重重。

事实上，北美500多家学院中，任意一家的博雅学位教育对于中国留学生而言都堪称最具价值的学位之一。

因为在人生的关键学习期间，他们能在这些学校学到非常重要的技能，而这些技能正是许多人力资源主管认为当今中国人才所缺乏的——也就是缺乏批判性思维能力、团队协作能力和创造能力等重要生活技能。

Theterm“LiberalArts”referstoabroadarrayofacademicfieldsencompassingsocialsciences,economics,humanities,classicalandmodernlanguages,andmathandscience.Morespecifically,thisincludesdepartmentslikePoliticalScience,Anthropology,Sociology,History,Philosophy,Geology,Economics,andanylanguagedepartment,fromLatinandGreektoMandarinandArabic.Studentshavethechoicetocrafttheirownmajor（s）andminor（s）fromthisselectiontoeventuallyfindwhattheyarebestatandmakeittheirveryownBachelor’sDegree.Withintheclassroom,LiberalArtsStudiesarecarriedoutinaSocraticmethodofteaching,whichemphasizescriticalthinking,debateandargumentation.Studentsareconsistentlypromptedtocarryoutdiscussionswiththeirclassmates,thusweighingtheimportanceofeveryideapresentedbytheirpeersandfiguringoutwhatlessonstodrawfromeachdiscussion,aswellastolearnhowtoclearlycommunicateandarguetheirownthoughts.

“博雅”一词所指的学术领域相当广泛，包括社会科学、经济学、人文学、古典与现代语言学以及数学与自然科学等。

更具体而言，包括政治学系、人类学系、社会学系、历史系、哲学系、地理系、经济系等以及各类语言系如拉丁语、希腊语、中文和阿拉伯语等。

学生们从以上各系中自主选择其主修课程和辅修课程，并最终发现个人擅长领域，确定自己的学士学位。

课堂上，博雅教育以苏格拉底问答教学法授课，侧重于批判性思维和辩论。

始终鼓励同学们相互展开讨论，权衡其他同学所持观点的重要性，然后总结每次讨论所学到的知识，并从中学会如何清楚地表达和论证自己的思想。

Itcertainlydoes.WesleyanUniversitywasthefirsttointroduceaGraduate-levelMastersDegreeofArtsinLiberalStudiesbackin1953,butthisforward-thinkingdegreelinkinguniversitiestocollegesisnowimplementedbymanyprestigiousinstitutionssuchasJohnsHopkinsUniversity,StanfordUniversityandtheUniversityofChicago,aswellasfiveoftheIvyLeagues,DartmouthCollege,HarvardUniversity,UniversityofPennsylvania,ColumbiaUniversity,andBrownUniversity.

博雅学院初创于古希腊（创办学院的想法源于哲学家苏格拉底），如今遍布美国各地：

事实上，全美共有500多家博雅学院。

加拿大与美国办学模式有所不同，主要是因为多数加拿大学院为公立学院，尽管如此，仍有几十家学院教授博雅课程和人文理念（如阿卡迪亚大学、康戈迪亚大学博雅学院、圣弗朗西斯泽维尔大学以及川特大学等，仅举几例）。

1）studentshaveaccesstoacampusandclassroomsdesignedinawaytofosterteamworkandactivecommunication,2）thecollegeteachingstaffistheretoguidestudentstowardsthebestpossibleresourcesfortheirstudies,insideandoutsideofthecampus,andfinally,3）studentsarefreetobuildtheirowndegree,compilingmajorsandminorsofdifferentareasofstudies,whichstimulatesbothindependenceandindividuality.Firstly,yourtypicalLiberalArtsCollegeisinaquiet,secludedareawherethelivingenvironmentiscomfortable,socialandfriendly.Largeurbanuniversitiesareusuallyoverwhelming,fast-pacedandtendtoostracizetheordinarystudentfromprofessorsandclassdiscussions.Itiseasierforsomeonetopassunnoticedandmissoutonextremelyvaluableresourcesstoredincollegelibraries.LiberalArtsCollegesontheotherhand,arebuilttoencouragecasual,activeconversationbetweenclassmatesandlendtheappropriatehandregardingtheexpansiveresearch-baseofanundergraduateinstitution.Thecampusisusuallyaquiet,openspacewherestudentsbenefitfromatight-knitcommunitybymeetingtheirprofessorsonaregularbasisandbeingtocomparetheirperformancewiththeirclassmates.Indeed,classroomsizesaresubstantiallysmallerthanuniversities:

与此相反，博雅学院则鼓励同学间进行随意主动的谈话，当学生们需要学校广泛的科研基地时，学校总是能够及时的伸出援助之手。

校园内总是安静、开放，亲密的社区氛围让学生们受益良多：

他们可定期与教授会面，同学间也可相互比较各自取得的成绩。

其实，博雅学院课堂人数比一般大学少得多：

哈弗大学是美国博雅学院中的佼佼者，其92%的课堂人数不超过30人，而阿默斯特学院平均课堂人数仅16人。

这种博雅学院独有的元素营造出独特的学术环境，让学生们可以非常有序的参与课堂讨论，敢于大胆地在每堂课上就当今日常话题分享各自观点，而非瞻前顾后，欲言又止。

哥伦比亚广播公司（CBSNews）的LynnO’Shaughnessy突出强调小课堂对于博雅学院的重要性。

她说，较小的课堂可以切实避免学生偷偷躲在大讲堂后面，只关注讲课内容的某些部分。

其次，一般大学雇用的教授只讲授部分课程，因为他们还得忙于硕士研讨班或博士研讨班的教学。

而博雅学院的教师则基本上专注于引导学生成功获得学士学位。
