ThewrongbeliefstartedwithScottishscientistandphysicianHenryFauldswho,in1888,wroteanarticleclaimingthateachpersonhasawhollyuniquesetoffingerprints.However,thetruthisthatthereisnowaytogathertheprintsofeverypersonwhoeverlivedandcomparedthem.

AccordingtoLiveScience,studieshaveshownanerrorrateof0.8percentinmatchingprintsintheUS.In2005,afterexaminingall22knowncasesoffingerprintmistakesmadesince1920intheAmericanlegalsystem,SimonCole,assistantprofessorofCriminologyattheUniversityofCaliforniaatIrvine,saidthatpeopleshouldnot“blindlyinsistthereiszeroerrorinfingerprintmatching,”accordingtoLiveScience.

Andthereareothermistakenbeliefsthatpeoplehold,whichscientistsareinapositiontocontradict.KristinHouser,writinginFuturism,givessomeotherexamplesof“facts”thatarefarfromfacts.Forinstance,itisconsideredabasictruththattherearefivebasichumansenses.TheGreekphilosopherAristotledevotedachapterinhisworkDeAnima(ontheSoul)tovision,hearing,touch,smellandtaste.

ButtherealityismorecomplicatedthanwhatAristotlethought.Therearemanymoresenses.Infact,scientistsaren’tevensurejusthowmanymore—estimates(估计)rangefrom22to33.Someofthoseothersensesincludeequilibrioception(senseofbalance),theremoception(senseofpain),andkinaesthesia(senseofmovement).

These“additional”sensesareactuallyessential.Oursensesofthirst,forexample,helpsourbodiestokeepthecorrecthydration(保湿)levels.Peoplewholackthissense—arareconditioncalledadipasia—canbecomeseverelydehydratedandevendie.

Thefactthatthepotentialofsomanywomenandgirlsisgoingunrealizedisasadthing—butitisalsoanopportunityforus.Weneedtorecognize,reduceandredistributetheburdenofworkthatisholdingthemback.Becauseifwomenhavetimetoinvest(投资)inthemselvesandtheirideas,theycouldtransformtheworld.
