Wefindthatbrightchildrenarerarelyheldbackbymixed-abilityteaching.Onthecontrary,boththeirknowledgeandexperienceareenriched.Wefeelthattherearemanydisadvantagesinstreaming(把……按能力分班)pupils.Itdoesnottakeaccountofthefactthatchildrendevelopatdifferentrates.Itcanhaveabadeffectonboththebrightandthenot-so-brightchildren.Afterall,itcanbequitediscouragingtobeatthebottomofthetopgrade!

Weareconcernedtodeveloptheabilitiesofallourpupilstothefull,butnotjusttheiracademicability.Wealsovaluepersonalqualitiesandsocialskills,andwefindthatmixed-abilityteachingcontributestoalltheseaspectsoflearning.

Inourclassrooms,weworkinvariousways.Thepupilsoftenworkingroups:

Thisgivesthemtheopportunitytolearntocooperate,toshare,andtodevelopleadershipskills.Theyalsolearnhowtocopewithpersonalproblemsaswellaslearninghowtothink,tomakedecisions,toanalyzeandevaluate,andtocommunicateeffectively.Thepupilslearnfromeachotheraswellasfromtheteacher.

Sometimesthepupilsworkinpairs;sometimestheyworkonindividualtasksandassignments,andtheycandothisattheirownspeed.Theyalsohavesomeformalclassteachingwhenthisisappropriate.Weencourageourpupilstousethelibrary,andweteachthemtheskillstheyneedinordertodothisefficiently.Anadvancedpupilcandoadvancedwork.Itdoesnotmatterwhatagethechildis.Weexpectourpupilstodotheirbest,nottheirleast,andwegivethemeveryencouragementtoattainthisgoal.

Newtechnologysurelyoffersmanybenefitstosomeaspectsofeducation,makingteachingandlearningeasierandmoreeffective.Forexample,technologysimplifiestasksthattakemuchlongertodo,likeconductingresearchorfindinginformation.Butadvancedtechnologyhasbadeffectssuchastheriskofbeingoverweight,tirednessandevenpotentialmentalhealthproblems,whileartdoesn’t.Ontheotherhand,unlikeart,newtechnologycandevelopstudents’critical(批判的)thinkingskillsandcreativeminds,bothofwhichcanhelpthemfindsuccessfulcareersaftertheygraduate.Furthermore,newtechnologycanhelpstudentslearntobearresponsibility,developtheirimaginationandincreasetheirconfidence.

Changenegativeself-talk.It’stooeasytothinkthesamenegativethoughtsoverandoveragain.However,youcanlearntochangethisbydoingsomecognitive-behavioraltherapy(认知行为疗法)onyourself.Whenyounoticeyourselfhavinganegativethoughtaboutyourself,replaceitwithapositiveone.Ifyoufindyourselfthinking“It’sallmyfault”,stopandremindyourselfofhowwellyou’vebeencopingandhowothersappreciateyou.
