IKEAistheworld’slargestfurnitureretailer,andthemanbehinditisIngvarKamprad,oneoftheworld’smostsuccessfulenterprisers.BorninSwedenin1926,Kampradwasanaturalbusinessman.Asachild,heenjoyedsellingthingsandmadesmallprofitsfromsellingmatches,seeds,andpencilsinhiscommunity.WhenKampradwas17,hisfathergavehimsomemoneyasarewardforhisgoodgrades.Naturallyheusedittostartupabusiness—IKEA.
IKEA’snamecomesfromKamprad’sinitials(I.K.)andtheplacewherehegrewup(‘E’and‘A’).TodayIKEAisknownforitsmodern,minimalistfurniture,butitwasnotafurniturecompanyinthebeginning.Rather,IKEAsoldallkindsofmiscellaneousgoods.
Kamprad’sgoodsincludedanythingthathecouldsellforprofitsatdiscountedprices,includingwatches,pensandstockings.
