1.ClickStartandthenclickRun.TypethecommandorcmdandthenpressEnter.

2.AttheDOSprompt,typeNETHELPandpressEnter.Youshouldseesomethinglikethescreenbelow:

UsetheStartmenutoopentheCommandPrompt,anMS-DOS-likewindow.PressStart>Programs>Accessories>CommandPromptorStart>Programs>CommandPrompt.

ThefollowingfigureshowstheCommandscreen.TypeipconfigandpresstheEnterkey.Thespellingofipconfigiscriticalwhilecaseisnot.ItisshortforIPConfiguration.

ThisfirstscreenshowstheIPaddress,subnetmask,anddefaultgateway.TheIPaddressandthedefaultgatewayshouldbeinthesamenetworkorsubnet,otherwisethishostwouldnotbeabletocommunicateoutsidethenetwork.Inthefigurethesubnetmasktellsusthatthefirstthreeoctetsmustbethesametobeinthesamenetwork.

Note:

IfthiscomputerisonaLAN,thedefaultgatewaymightnotbeseenifitisrunningbehindaProxyServer.Recordthefollowinginformationforthiscomputer.

Lookovertheresults.Noticethatthefirstlineofoutputshowsthehostname,DESKTOPintheexample,followedbytheIPaddress.ThismeansthecomputerwasabletoresolvethehostnametoanIPaddress.Withoutnameresolution,thepingwouldhavefailedbecauseTCP/IPonlyunderstandsvalidIPaddresses,notnames.
