《飘》以美国南北战争为背景,分析并探讨了斯佳丽,一个敢于面对现实、坚强、勇敢却又任性、固执、虚荣心强且有着叛逆性格的女性盛衰沉浮的命运。

Mitchell,Margaret(1900-1949),Americanauthor,wroteGonewiththeWind(1936),oneofthemostpopularnovelsofalltime.BorninAtlanta,Georgia,sheattendedSmithCollege[7].ShewasareporterandfeaturewriterfortheAtlantaJournalfrom1922until1926,whenshebeganwritingGonewiththeWind,whichshecompletedtenyearslater.ThisromanticpictureoflifeintheSouthduringtheAmericanCivilWarbecameabestselleralmostimmediatelyandwasawardedthePulitzerPrizein1937.In1955themanuscriptforlostLaysen,ashortnovelMitchellhadwrittenin1916,wasdiscovered.Itwaspublishedin1966.

ScarlettO’Harawasaheadstrong,selfishsouthernbelle.ShewasborninafarmerfamilyinSouthAmericaintheperiodofAmericaCivilWar.Althoughhisfatherwasnotanobleborn,hewassuccessandbecomeupclassinGeorgiawhenScarlettwasborn.Inherfamily,shehasamild,virtuousandcapablemother,surfacestrictheartsimpleandhonestfather,rigorousandfondnurseandtwosisterswhosecharacterwasdefinitelydifferentfromher.

ThestoryiscenteredonScarlett.Shehascapturedtheheartsofalltheeligiblemeninherentirecountywithherthicklashes,sparklinggreeneyes,eighteeninchwaistandoutrageousflatterythatrollsoffhertonguelikehoney.Thoroughlyshelteredinherbigwhitehouseandhereverywhimcateredforbyherbossyblackmother,theonlythinglackinginScarlettlifeistheunattainableAshleyWilkes,herheart’sdesire.AfterAshleymarries,ScarlettalsoentersintoalovelesswedlockjustastheCivilWarissparkedoff,burningawaytheblissofthelifethatsheonceknow.Scarlettsheerdeterminationandforceofwillistheonlythingthatkeepsherfromfallingintotheabyssofdestruction.Withhermotherdeadandhisfatherlosinghissanity.Scarletttakesonthedutiesoftheentirehouseholdafterthewarravagestheentireland,farmingcottontoscrapetogetherwhatlittleshecantofeedthehousehold.Finally,facingeviction,Scarlettdesperatelyturnstotheonlypersonstillleftwithanyfortune-thedashing,swarthy,blockaderRhettButler,aself–proclaimedscoundrelwhohadlosthishearttoScarlettwhenherealizedtheirkindredspirits.Theyendupmarryingandforabriefperiod,Scarlettishappygildinghernowlifewithasmanygaudypossessionsandshowofmaterialwealthasshecan,tryingtoerasethehungerandpovertythatthewarhadbrought.However,notevenhavingachildcouldfilltheholeleftinherheartbyAshleyWilkes,andScarlettmakesthelivesofallthosearoundhermiserableasaresultofthisunfulfilledchildhooddreamthatshenevergrewoutof.

Afteraseriesoftragedies,Rhettfinallygivesuphope,hisheartsappedofeveryonceoflovethatheoncefelt.Wearyandbitter,hetakeshisleave,respondingwithafamous“Franklymydear,Idon’tgiveadamn“toScarlett’sfrenziedattemptsattryingtomakehimstay,forsherealizedtolatethathewasthemanthatshetrulyloved.

1.3TheArgumentaboutGoneWiththeWind

GonewiththeWindisaremarkableworkwithromanticismandrealism.Fromthecharacters,itusedromanticism.Actually,theheroineScarlettbecameanidealismcharacterwhichshownthesouthernmyth.Manycriticsthoughtthatthenovel,whichwasapopularnovelbutit,couldn’tentertheHolyPalaceofAmericaliterature.Becauseitfilledwithintensivelocalcolor,andobjectively,Mitchellbeautifiedmanoreconomythatwascollapsingandslavesystem[7].ThepapertriestoexploreScarlett,theheroine,herstrong,braveanddaretofacereality,butheadstrong,stubbornandrebelliouscharacter.

 

2 TheCharacterofScarlett

2.1Ononehand,Scarlettwasarebellious,headstrongandstubborngirl.

2.1.1Firstsheprotestedthewholecommoncustomsandetiquettes.

Whenshewasachild,Scarletthadbeenrearedinthetraditionofgreatladiesandshownuncommontoall.Althoughofthethreedaughters,ScarlettwastheonlygirltheBlackmotherfondestof.Shealwaysmadeherheadache.Toblackmother’sindignation,herpreferredplaymateswerenotherdemuresistersorthewell-brought-upwalkersgirlsbuttheNegrochildrenontheplantationandtheboysoftheneighborhoods,andshecouldclimbatreeorthrowarockaswellasanyofthem.BlackmotherwasgreatlyperturbedthatEllen’sdaughtershoulddisplaysuchtraitsandfrequentlyadjuredherto“acklakalillady”“Youmustbetenserandgracefullyquiet”.EllentoldScarlett,“Youmustbemoregentle,dear,moresedate”.“Youmustnotinterruptgentlemenwhentheyarespeaking,evenifyoudothinkyouknowmoreaboutmattersthantheydo.Gentlemendonotlikeforwardgirls.”[1]AfterEllenandBlackmothermakeconcertedefforts,Scarlettfinallylearnedhowtobehavelikeagirlfromrespectablefamily.ButScarlettonlylearnedtheoutwardsignsofgentility,theinnergracefromwhichthesesignsshouldspringsheneverlearnednordidsheseeanyreasonforlearningit.Scarlettlearnttheseetiquettes,onlybecauseshewantedtobepopular,inherinner,sheneverlikedthem.“I’mtiredofeverlastinglybeingunnaturalandneverdoinganythingIwanttodo.I’mtiredofactinglikeIdon’teatmorethanabird,andwalkingwhenIwanttorunandsayingIfeelfaintafterawaltz,whenIcoulddancefortwodaysandnevergettired.I’mtiredofsaying,‘howwonderfulyouare!

2.1.2Abouthermarriage,Scarlettalsodisplayedprotestingtheoldcustomandpersonalityrebel.

Herfatherthoughtparentsmustdecideperfectmarriage.AndhealsothoughtifScarlettmarriedoneofTarletonbrothers,thetwomanorscouldbecomeonebigmanor.Heconsidereditfromreallybenefitbutignoredtherealfeelingsofherdaughteraboutlove.Objectively,althoughScarlett’semotionswereexactlyimmatureatthattime,andherfather’spreventionwasalsonotunreasonable,inScarlett’smind,herfatherrepresentedtheoldidea,anditwasdogmawhichbroughtaboutbythisoldideapreventedherfrompursuingherlove,so,Scarletthatedthedogmaandetiquetteverymuch.Thisaffectedhergettingridofherlifestyleandpursuingnewlife.

Notonlybondagethefamilybroughttoher,butalsodeep-rootedinfluence,especiallytheinfluenceofEllen’svirtuousandherfather’sstrong.AlthoughScarlettdislikedthisfamily-education,morethandecades’lifeinthefamilyaffectedherverymuch,especiallyhermotherEllen,leftindeliblebrandinhermind.Inhereyes,allwomenwereenemiesexcepthermother,hermotherwasdifferentandScarlettregardedherassomethingholyandapartfromalltherestofhumankind,WhenScarlettwasachild,shehadconfusedhermotherwiththeVirginMary,andnowthatshewasoldershesawnoreasonforchangingheropinion.Whenhermotherdied,Scarlettwassadpainfullyandherfather’svigorous,plainandhonestandvulgaritywerefithermind.SoScarlettlovedherfatherandmotherverymuch.

2.1.3WhenScarlettleftherparentsandsetupherownfamily.

Shedidn’tcalm.Herlongingforlifeandlovewerecallingher.Fromnowon,notonlydidsheprotestfamilybondagebutalsothewholesocietyconception.

HerfirsthusbandCharles.HamiltondiedinthewarandScarlettbecamewisdom.Actually,Scarlettdidn’tloveCharlesatall,sheonlywantedtomakeAshelyangerandsatisfiedhervanityinhermind.Inayounggirl’smind,vanityisstrongerthanemotion.Therewasnothinginherhotterheartexcepthatred.ScarlettthoughtifshemarriedCharlesimmediately,whichcouldletAshleythinkthatshedidn’tlovehimbutflirt.ButwhenScarlettpromisedmarryCharled,“Deepinher,underlayersofhurtprideandcoldpracticality,somethingstirredhurting.Anadultemotionwasbeingborn,strongerthanhervanityorherwillfulselfishness.ShelovedAshleyandsheknewshelovedhim,andshehadnevercaredsomuchasinthatinstantwhenshesawCharlesdisappearingaroundthecurvedgraveledwalk.”[1]AlthoughScarlettregretted,shemustpaypricetoherchildishbehavior–lessthantwoweeks,shebecamewidow,andmoredisappointedthatwasshebecameamother.

Inhereyes,“Sowidowmightaswellbedead.”WillScarlettyieldtothissituationtobeawidow?

Definitelyno,becauseshewasScarlett,shewon’tyieldtothissituation,shewillchangeallthese.
