Wikitongueswasstartedin2016asanopenInternetcollectionofworldlanguages.Theself-described"community"isoperatedbyvolunteersfromaroundtheworld.ThecollectionisintheformoflanguagevideosthatpeoplespeakingthelanguagesaddtotheWikitongueswebsite.

Udellsayssavinglanguagesdoescount.Therearemanyexamplesoflanguagesthatdisappearedbutlaterreturnedtouse."Hebrewwentextinct(灭绝的)inthe4thcenturyBC,andwasrevived(复兴)inthe1800s.Nowonceagain,it'sthemothertongueofhalfoftheworld'sJewishpopulation."AnotherexampleisaNativeAmericantribe.Thetribe'slanguagewentextinctinthe1940s.Butthetribewasabletosuccessfullybuildupa“languagerecovery”inrecentyears.
