Philosophyofthe"will"

AkeyfocusofSchopenhauerwashisinvestigationofindividualmotivation.BeforeSchopenhauer,Hegelhadpopularizedtheconceptof Zeitgeist,theideathatsocietyconsistedofa collectiveconsciousness whichmovedinadistinctdirection,dictatingtheactionsofitsmembers.Schopenhauer,areaderofbothKantandHegel,criticizedtheirlogicaloptimismandthebeliefthatindividualmoralitycouldbedeterminedbysocietyandreason.Schopenhauerbelievedthathumansweremotivatedonlybytheirownbasicdesires,or WillezumLeben (WilltoLive),whichdirectedallofmankind.[15] ForSchopenhauer,humandesirewasfutile,illogical,directionless,and,byextension,sowasallhumanactionintheworld.ToSchopenhauer,theWillisametaphysicalexistencewhichcontrolsnotonlytheactionsofindividual,intelligentagents,butultimatelyallobservablephenomena.Will,forSchopenhauer,iswhatKantcalledthe"thing-in-itself".
