Firstup,thismorning,thesouthernandcentralpartsofTexaswereunderaflashfloodwatch.MaywasthewettestmonthintheU.S.state`shistory,butJunehasn`tbroughtanyreliefsofar.Rainfallofmorethantwoinchesperhourisintheforecast.

Thegovernorhasdeclaredastateofemergencyin31Texascountiesandwhatthatdoesisspeedupassistancetotheareasthatneeditmost.Thegroundsarealreadysaturatedinmanypartsofthestate.So,ourforecastofmoreraincanonlyincreasethethreatoffloods.

Forperspective,lastmonthalone,Texasgotmorethan35trillion,that`strillionwithaT,35trilliongallonsofrain.Thatwouldhavebeenenoughtocovertheentirestatewithalmosteightinchesofwater,thoughtherainwasconcentratedinspecificareas.

Thisraindoesn`tstopuntilSaturdayafternoon,maybeSunday,we`rewatchingupstreambecauseallthatwaterhastorunbackdownrighthere.

SomeresidentsofthecityofFortMcMurray,Canada,havebegunreturninghome.Lastmonth,themassivewildfireforcedtheevacuationof80,000peopleinthearea.Thousandsoffirefightersarestilltryingtogetahandleonit,thoughtheblazeisnolongerathreattoFortMcMurray.Thefiredestroyedabout10percentofthecity,atleast2,400buildingsorhomes.

NoteveryoneinFortMcMurrayisallowedtocomebackyet.Authoritiessaydebrisfromthefirehastoberemovedbeforesomehomescanbeoccupied.

Manyarestillintact,butsomeresidentsdon`tknowwhatthey`llsee.

FromCanada,we`removingacrosstheAtlantictoSwitzerland,wherethelongest,deepesttunnelintheworldisnowopen.It`snamedtheGotthardBaseTunnel.It`s35mileslongandrunsunderneaththeSwissAlps.Insomeplaces,it`soneandahalfmilesdeepandthetrainsthattraverseithitspeedsofupto155milesperhour.

Willitsavetime?

Yes.OfficialssaytrainswillbeabletogetfromZurich,Switzerland,toMilan,Italy,aboutanhourfasteronthisroutethantrainsonotherroutes.

Yes.Officialssayfreightwillbemovedmorequickly,moreefficientlyandmorereliably.

Whatwasthecost?

Thetunneltookseventeenyearsand$12billiontobuild,about2,600peopleworkedonitalongtheway.

There`sanotherwaytomeasurethequalityoftheair,though,byflyingrightthroughit.

Thisflyinglaboratorywillfindoutwhatpollutantsarehere,who`scausingthemandhowtheycanbemeasuredmoreaccuratelyfromspace.

EighthoursflyingthelengthandbreadthofSouthKorea,overcities,mansions（ph）andseas,collectingandanalyzingdata.

Theequipmentonthisflightmaybestate-of-the-art,buttheplaneitselfisalmosthalfacenturyold.Itfirstflewbackin1969I`mtold,aspartoftheAlItaliafleet.But,asyoucansee,NASAhascompletelyrefittedittosuititspurposes--25differentinstrumentsformeasuringsolutionand34scientists.

Today,U.S.PresidentBarackObamaissettobecomethefirstsittingAmericanleadertovisitHiroshima.There`ssomecontroversyaboutthetrip.SomeanalystssayitwillbeseenasaU.S.apologyforthebombing.SomeJapanesesaytheAmericanpresidentshouldapologizefortheattack,someAmericanssayheshouldnot.ThatJapanshouldapologizefirstforitsmistreatmentofU.S.prisonersduringWorldWarII.
