Inthedecisions,theenvironmentcommissioner,StavrosDimas,contendsthatthegeneticallymodifiedcorn,ormaizecouldaffectcertainbutterflyspecies,specificallythemonarch,andotherbeneficialinsects.Forinstance,researchthisyearindicatesthatlarvaeofthemonarchbutterflyexposedtothegeneticallymodifiedcorn’’behavedifferentlythanotherlarvae.’’InthedecisionconcerningthecornseedsproducedbyDowandPioneer,Mr.Dimascalls’’potentialdamageontheenvironmentirreversible.’’InthedecisiononSyngenta’scorn,hesaysthat’’thelevelofriskgeneratedbythecultivationofthisproductfortheenvironmentisunacceptable.’’
AdecisionbytheEuropeanUniontobarcultivationofthegeneticallymodifiedcropswouldbethefirstofitskindinthetradebloc,andwouldintensifythecontinuingbattleovergeneticallymodifiedcorn.BanningtheapplicationsforcorncropsalsowouldmarkaboldnewstepforEuropeanenvironmentalauthorities,whoarealreadyaggressivelypursuingregulationsonemissionsfromcarsandaircraft,settingitatoddswiththeUnitedStatesandangeringindustries.
’’TheseproductshavebeengrownintheU.S.andothercountriesforyears,’’saidStephenNorton,aspokesmanfortheUnitedStatestraderepresentative.’’Wearenotawareofanyothercasewhenaproducthasbeenrejectedafterhavingbeenreviewedanddeterminedsafe’’byEuropeanfoodsafetyauthorities,hesaid.
