Thereis,however,apricetobepaidforthisequalityofopportunity;competition.Ifmuchoflifeisseenasarace,thenapersonmustruntheraceinordertosucceed:

apersonmustcompetewithothers.IfeverypersonhasanequalchancetosucceedintheUnitedStates,thenitiseveryperson’sdutytotry,Americansmatchtheirenergyandintelligenceagainstthatoftheirneighborsinacompetition.Peoplewholiketocompeteandaremoresuccessfulthanothersarehonoredbybeingcalled“winners”.Ontheotherhand,thosewhodonotliketocompeteandarenotsuccessfulwhentheytryareoftendishonoredbybeingcalled“losers”.Thisisespeciallytrueforwomen.

ThepressuresofcompetitioninthelifeofanAmericanbegininchildhoodandcontinueuntilretirementfromwork.LearningtocompetesuccessfullyispartofgrowingupintheUnitedStates.Inarecentopinionpoll(民意调查),60percentoftheAmericanpeopleagreedwiththisstatement:
