The1RuleofBinding
Thereisonlyonerule.Thegraindirectionmustgofromheadtotail.Thisisthesecrettoagoodbookthatstaysopen.Ifyouhavethegraingoingthewrongwaythepaperwillripple,thefoldwillnotbecleanandthebookwillwanttocloseitself.
HowtoFindtheGrain
Thisisanimportantstep.Wemustfindthegrainofthepaper.Thereare4ways.
1.Feeling
2.Folding
3.Tearing
4.Wetting
Feeling
Thisisthequickestandeasiestway.Getthepaperasthoughtyourabouttofolditandpressdownlightly,rotatethepaper90degreesandrepeat.Thedirectionwithleastresistanceisthedirectionthegrainisheading.Thistechniqueislesseffectivewhenworkingwiththinnerpapers.
Folding
Inthismethodcompletelyfoldthepaperbothways,thedirectionwiththecleanestfoldisthedirectionofthegrain.Itisnoticablewhenitsbeenfoldedthewrongway,therewillbesmallcrinklesandfoldingisharder.
Tearing
Tearthepaperinbothdirectionsquickly.Theripwillbefairlycleanandstaystraightifithasbeentorninthedirectionofthegrain.Ifyoutearpaperagainstthegraintheripoftencurvestoonesideandismessy
Wetting
Ifyouwetthepaperthepaperwillcurlinthedirectionofthegrain.Wettingjustthecornerissometimessufficient.
Cutting
Afterfindingthegrainwearereadytobegin.First,weneedtopickthedimensionsthiswilloftenbedeterminedbythepaperstockyouget.IusuallyjustsemifoldittogetanideaoftheoptionsIhave.ForthisbookIdecidedtousethebreadthofthepaperfoldedafewtimesandthenitsheighthalved.

First,findanedgeofatableorpreferablyaslabofwood,theadvantageofthisisportability.Second,cut3piecesofribbon(ifyoucan'tfindthiskindoftape,Isometimesjustuseoffcutsofbuckraminlightcolours).Theribbonshouldwraparoundthespinewithexcessoneitherside.Ifyourunsureusemorethanyouneed.
Thenextstepistomeasureoutwheretheribbonswillbepositioned.Trytokeepanequaldistancebetweenthem.Keepinmindthatyoucanspacetheribbonsoutbyeye,butifyou'reaperfectionistlikemeyou'llprobablywanttomeasure.Ifyoupositionthembadly,itwillbevisiblebecausethetheydeterminethegapsinthesewing.ThismightnotbesuchaproblemifyourusingwhitethreadbutinthisbookIusedred.
Youcanalso,dependingontheshapeofthebook,usemoreorlessthan3tapes,usuallytwoisfinebutIwantedthisbooktobestronganddurable,addingtothequalityofthebook.

StartfromeitherendbutmakesureyougoINfirstfromtheoutside.Ifindtheeasiestwaytodothisistopricktheholesfromtheoutsidethensewthewholesectionatonce.Youwanttomakeholesclosetotheribbonbutnottooclose,givethemroomtobreathe,maybe1or2mm.LEAVESOMETHREADATTHEFIRSTHOLETOTIEITOFF!
Atthispoint,foldthefirstsectionback,givethethreadayanksoit'sfirmandgiveitarubonthefoldwithyourbonefolder.Nowliftupyourweightandputthesecondsectionontop.Setitup,withthenewsectionopenandtheweightontop.Prickyourholesinthenewsectionusingthelowersectionforreferenceandjustheadbacktheotherway.You'llenduplikethis.

Haveaplayaroundwithit,makesureitopensokandeverythingisfastenedsnugly.
Nowwhatwewantisnicecleanedges,takeittoaprinters,localstationeryshoporanywherethathasaguillotineandsomeoneyoucantrustwilldoitwell,somelocalplacednearmedoitforfree.DONOTGOTOKINKOS,theyarethedevil.Allyouwantisenoughchoppedofftomakeitsquaredoffandstraight.
Thisbookhasacurvedspine,Frenchstyle.Youdon'thavetodoitlikethisbutIenjoyit.Togetthecurveyouwantjuststartpushingandshapingthespinebyhand,whenyouhavethecurvedesiredputaweightontopandpositionitattheedgeofthedeskoryourpieceofwood,we'regoingtoglueit!

Inthissectionwearegoingtosecurethespine,thisincludesgluing,usingmull/jaconet,puttingtheheadbandsonandabookmarkifyoudesire,thensealingitwithonepieceofpapertohelpsecureeverything.

Youneedabitofmullaboutthisbig,enoughtowraparoundtowheretheribbon/tapegoesto.Icuttwopiecesofmullforthisforextrastrengthanddurability.
Thenyouneedsomeheadbands!
AsIsaidbefore,blackandredforthisone.IwentandboughtsomeofthissweetassredfrommysuppliersoutinSydney'sIndustrialarea.Usuallyyouonlyneed2cuttings,oneforheadandoneforthetailbutyoucandoublethemup.Traditionally,themoreflamboyanttheheadbands,themoreimportantthebookwas,plusitdrawsattention.Theheadbandshouldbejustenoughtowraparoundthespineofthebooksnuggly.
Oktimeforthebestbit!
Spreadtheglueevenlyoverthewholespine,pushtheglueintothecrackswiththebonefolderandyourfingers.
OncethegluebecametackyIgrabbedmyfirstlayerofmullandrubbeditin,thenaddedanotherlayerofglueontopofthat
Takingsofftheweightquickly,Ifoldedtheedgesinandputthenewlayerofmullonfollowedbymoreglue.
Nowgluetheheadbandson,withglueunderneathandontop.Ifyouwantabookmark,glueitdownthespineabout2inchesbetweenthemullandtheheadbands.
